A Television Fashion Parade Trivia Quiz

A light-hearted quiz that requires matching television character names to a close-up of the clothing that they would typically wear. No apologies are made for including three examples of the iconic uniform from 'The Next Generation'. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jean-Luc Picard

Messing with the minds of 'Star Trek' viewers across the world, the uniform colours changed meanings between 'The Original Series' ('TOS') and 'The Next Generation' ('TNG'). In 'TOS', command staff wore gold uniforms but decades later, the command team in 'TNG' sported red. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) was Captain of the Enterprise-D for the full seven series of 'TNG' and could be seen wearing variations of the red uniform throughout the run.
2. Doug Ross

Despite his subsequent filmic success, George Clooney is still remembered for his portrayal of Douglas Ross, M.D. in the American television series 'ER'. Although Doug Ross works in the emergency room his specialty is pediatrics, which results in Clooney's scrubs-wearing character being central to some of the more tragic scenes involving young patients.

George Clooney received many accolades for his portrayal of Doug Ross including nominations for two Emmys and three Golden Globes.
3. Mr. Bean

'Mr. Bean' is a celebration of quirky Britishness that is accentuated by the protagonist's non-vocal nature. Played by Rowan Atkinson, Mr. Bean stumbles from one calamity to another and, when not in pyjamas, is almost always seen donning his tweed jacket, white shirt and red tie. Somewhat unbelievably, Mr. Bean has a girlfriend, Irma Gobb (Matilda Ziegler), and their relationship is the centrepiece for a brilliant seasonal episode from 1992 titled 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean'. What is in the ring box, Mr. Bean?

The television series has given rise to a number of film adaptations including 'Mr Bean's Holiday' (2007) and the excellent 'Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie' (1997).
4. Tinky Winky

'Teletubbies' was a British television show for young children that was originally broadcast on BBC Two (1997-2001) with a franchise reboot airing on CBeebies from 2015 to 2018. The four Teletubbies were Tinky Winky (purple, triangle antenna), Dipsy (green, dipstick antenna), Laa-Laa (yellow, curly antenna) and Po (red, circular antenna) and they each had a television screen on their bellies.

Amongst the many bizarre aspects of 'Teletubbies' included the "shows within a show" that would be broadcast via these rectangular portable televisions!
5. Morticia Addams

"They're creepy and they're kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They're altogether ooky. The Addams Family". And the theme tune is absolutely right! The matriarch of the family is Morticia Addams who, like the rest of the kooky bunch, wears black. In Morticia's case, she wears a smartly fitting black dress with long sleeves that screams Halloween!

Morticia Addams has - for both television and film - been played by a number of actresses including Carolyn Jones, Anjelica Huston and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
6. Sheldon Cooper

Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons, was a peculiarly loveable character from 'The Big Bang Theory' (2007-2019). His wardrobe consisted of suits that could best be described as "academic" and casual wear that turned the geek aesthetic dial up to maximum! One of Sheldon's many comic-themed garments was a red t-shirt featuring a thunderbolt on a white circle, an homage to Barry Allen aka The Flash.
7. Beverly Crusher

In all but one season of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation', Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) was the Chief Medical Officer aboard the Enterprise-D. She was seen wearing the blue uniform that was issued to staff employed to undertake scientific and medical roles. Blue is also famously associated with Spock (Leonard Nimoy) from 'The Original Series'.

Blue is often used in television and film as a representation of intelligence; as just two additional examples, blue was both the house colour for Ravenclaw ('Harry Potter') and the uniform colour for Erudite ('Divergent').
8. Kenny McCormick

"Oh, my God! They killed Kenny..." and we will stop that particular quotation right there! Kenny McCormick is the 'South Park' character that just keeps dying (and just keeps coming back). Kenny is often seen shuffling around his Colorado hometown - along with friends Eric Cartman, Stan Marsh and Kyle Broflovski - wearing an orange parka with a gigantic hood that renders the majority of his speech completely inaudible!
9. Seong Gi-hun

Korean culture became more mainstream with western audiences throughout the 2010s and 2020s whether it be in music ('Gangnam Style' by Psy in 2012), film ('Parasite' in 2019) or television and streaming ('Squid Game'). 'Squid Game' was a successful Netflix show whose first series was released in 2021. One of the themes of the show related to people being "down and out" or "giving up on life" being offered the "opportunity" to fight for their life in a series of childhood games that had been given a deadly twist.

One of those characters was the protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Number 456), played by Lee Jung-jae. 456 had a gambling problem and the chance to play the Squid Game was too big a temptation for him to reject, not least because victory would help settle his debts. The image of a green and white jacket is a representation of the clothing that the players had to wear when playing the lethal games!
10. Wilma Flintstone

Wilma Flintstone, with the brilliant maiden name of Slaghoople, is predominantly depicted as a stay-at-home mom in 'The Flintstones' but later in life becomes a newspaper reporter for one of the local "rags" in Bedrock. Wilma's appearance is a delicate and elegant one consisting of a simple white dress and a necklace made from white rocks or pebbles.

This elegance is certainly not shared by her husband, Fred, who is a caveman in every sense of the word!
11. Waylon Smithers

Waylon Smithers is the character from 'The Simpsons' with an unhealthy obsession with the mean-spirited Mr. Burns. Smithers - with his purple bow tie, green jacket and teal trousers - was often characterised as a closeted gay man who perhaps wanted a relationship with Mr. Burns that was more than just a professional one.

This state of affairs lasted a long time until the writers decided to confirm that Smithers was indeed gay in an episode entitled 'The Burns Cage' (2016).
12. Tasha Yar

Natasha Yar, or "Tasha" for short, was a lieutenant and Security Chief aboard the Enterprise-D for the opening season of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'. Tasha Yar was somewhat controversially dispensed with by the end of the first season but this was largely brought about due to the actress who played the part, Denise Crosby, being unhappy with the character's lack of depth and development.

The gold uniform was used in 'The Next Generation' mostly for crew members holding posts related to matters of security and operations. This is contrast to 'The Original Series' in which gold uniforms were donned by the command.
