Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When I first met Jack at the sports stadium in Los Angeles, what did I tell him that I almost once was?

Answer: A doctor

Desmond and Jack first met in L.A. at a sports stadium. They were both running up stairs when Jack hurt his ankle and Desmond ran over to see if he was all right. Desmond told Jack that he didn't think it was sprained and when Jack asked him what he knew about sprains Desmond replied, "I was almost a doctor once".
2. When Penelope tracked me down in Los Angeles, she asked me why I never wrote to her while in prison. I admitted to her that I did write but her father, Charles, intercepted all of my letters.

Answer: False

Desmond had been serving with The Royal Scots when he was dishonorably discharged and sent to prison. During this time, he wrote dozens of letters to his girlfriend Penelope Widmore. When he was released from prison, he was met by Charles Widmore, Penelope's father, who showed Desmond a box full of all the letters Desmond had written Penelope.

When Penelope confronted Desmond about not writing though he didn't tell her what her father had done.
3. During the second season opener, I was shown down in "the hatch" doing a number of different things. Which thing was I NOT shown doing?

Answer: Reading a book

The second season started off down in "the hatch", where after waking up to input the numbers into the computer, Desmond then put on some music, washed dishes, exercised, took a shower, did laundry and injected himself with some substance.
4. When the survivors of the Oceanic Flight 815 crash first came into the hatch, I was very suspicious of them and even held a gun to someone's head. Who sneaked up and knocked me over the head with a gun, which consequentially caused me to shoot the computer as I fell down?

Answer: Kate

After the hatch door was blown off, a type of tunnel was revealed and Locke wanted to go down it. There were arguments among the survivors about what to do but eventually Locke and Kate came back to investigate. Locke attached a harness to Kate and lowered her down but Desmond grabbed her. Locke went in and found her on the ground but then Desmond came out, pointing a gun at Locke.

After some questioning, Desmond told Locke to tie up Kate. Locke did so but slipped Kate a knife in the process then put her in a storage room. Jack came into the hatch next and found Locke with a gun to his head.

At that point Kate had cut through her ropes, escaped through a vent, found a gun and was sneaking up on Desmond. She knocked him over the head with the gun and though he fell down, his gun went off, the bullet hitting the computer.
5. When Jack asked me how I ended up in the hatch, how long ago did I tell him that I came there?

Answer: 3 years ago

After he accidentally shot the computer, Desmond was desperately trying to fix it. Jack and Locke kept asking him how he'd ended up there and Desmond told them that three years ago he'd been in a boat race around the world when he crashed.
6. After shooting the computer, I attempted to fix it, but failed. Believing that we would all die, I threw some supplies together and fled the hatch. Who ran after me, though, screaming at me for running away because nothing was going to even happen?

Answer: Jack

Jack caught up to Desmond in the jungle and pulled his gun on him. Desmond started telling him which numbers to input into the computer should it actually get fixed but Jack just told him to shut up because nothing was going to happen. Jack was hysterical and asked Desmond why he was running if he didn't even know what he was running from.

At the mention of "running", Desmond remembered that he had met Jack at the sports stadium in Los Angeles. Desmond asked Jack about the girl that Jack had "failed" but Jack kept telling him that it didn't matter. Desmond kept asking which caused Jack to scream at him "I married her" and then start crying. Desmond deduced that Jack was no longer married to her and after telling Jack "See you in another life" he disappeared.
7. After fleeing the hatch, I tried to sail away from the island on the boat that I'd used in my race around the world. I was on my way to Fiji, but ended up sailing right back to the island. When the survivors of the plane crash saw the boat, Sawyer, Jack, and Sayid swam out to investigate. What did they find me doing when the came onto the boat?

Answer: Sitting down in the cabin drunk, and holding a shotgun

Sawyer, Jack, and Sayid climbed onto the boat, their guns at the ready. They could hear music coming from the cabin below and suddenly someone started shooting through the cabin door. The shooter continued this until the gun was empty. Jack opened up the door and below they saw Desmond sitting on the ground, very drunk, with a shotgun in his hand.

He just laughed, looked at them and said "You".
8. Once I was back on the island, Sayid approached me and told me he needed to use the boat. I told him not to waste his time and Sayid said he wasn't trying to leave the island, but sail to another part of it. I asked him if he was going to see the 'Others' except I didn't use this term. What term did I use to describe the 'Others'?

Answer: The Hostiles

When Sayid told Desmond what part of the island he was sailing to, Desmond asked him if he was going to see "the Hostiles" which the survivors had named "the Others". He didn't reveal to Sayid what, if anything, he really knew about the Others but simply claimed that "ignorance is bliss" and allowed Sayid the use of the boat.
9. When Locke and I tried to prove that "pushing the button" didn't matter, I discovered that my not pushing it was in fact the reason that the plane had crashed. I tried to explain this to Locke, but he smashed the computer. The only way then to save everyone was to use the failsafe key. Where did I keep the key?

Answer: In my copy of the book "Our Mutual Friend"

Desmond first learned of the key when his old partner, Inman, almost used it in a drunken state. When Inman was accidentally killed, Desmond took the key from him. Later when Desmond realized the magnitude of what would happen should the button not be pushed (and after Locke smashed the computer), he retrieved the failsafe key which had been kept safe within his copy of Charles Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend", the book Desmond planned to read before he died.
10. At the end of the second season, who did I credit with having once saved my life?

Answer: Locke

In the last flashback of season two, we saw Desmond sitting alone in the hatch, drinking a bottle of booze and holding a gun, clearly contemplating suicide. He then picked up the book "Our Mutual Friend" which he had said was the last thing he wanted to read before he died.

He opened the book and a letter from Penelope, telling Desmond that she loved him and to hold on, fell out. Desmond started sobbing and trashing the hatch when he heard a banging on the door above, something that gave him new hope. Later, when he was about to use the failsafe key, Desmond explained to Locke that Locke's banging on the hatch door had saved Desmond's life and that it was fate that Desmond should now save Locke's life.
