Nestor Carbonell, born in New York City, has a distinguished list of film and television credits. He played the very charismatic Batmanuel in that short-lived albeit brilliant television series, "The Tick." You may also recall Nestor as being the mayor in the very popular film, "The Dark Knight." In "Lost," Carbonell is our mysteriously suave Richard Alpert.

Over a time span encompassing some forty years, Richard's relatively youthful visage never seems to waver. Richard attributes this gift to Jacob. Over the ages, Richard has acquired a great deal of knowledge and wisdom.

Richard is supremely interested in the progress made by Juliet in her field of expertise. He offers her a position with his firm, which is purportedly located in Portland, Oregon. Hence, we see the import of the episode's title. Juliet after some initial reluctance accepts the offer, but is whisked away to the Island, instead of Portland.

Richard is a member of the cabal sometimes referred to as the Others. The origins of this group are shrouded in mystery. Richard Alpert is depicted as being relatively high-placed in the group's hierarchy, yet receives instruction from Jacob.

In the episode "Jughead", John has to convince Richard that they have met before. Richard examines the compass. He says, "I gave you this?" John says, "Yes." It seems that Richard is following a linear path through time, while John is traveling back and forth.

In the season five episode prior to the finale, Richard Alpert is the main character in "Follow the Leader." In this episode, Sun observes Locke having a conversation with Richard. Sun asks Ben, "Who's that man he's talking to?" Ben solemnly replies, "His name is Richard Alpert. He's a kind of an adviser. And he has had that job for a very, very long time."

In the episode, "Cabin Fever", Richard administers a test of sorts to a very young John Locke. Richard, after arranging some objects on a table, tells John, "Okay, now tell me, John, which of these things belong to you?" John, after some consideration selects the knife as being an object that "he already owns." Richard is summarily disappointed and tells John's mother, "I'm afraid John isn't quite ready for our school. I'm sorry I've wasted your time."

Answer: Richard renders Eloise unconscious by striking her with his revolver.

In an effort to protect Eloise, Richard renders her unconscious. Jack is shocked and wants to know what Richard is doing. Richard replies, "I'm protecting our leader. Get back. She's gonna be angry when she wakes up, but that's a lot better than being dead. She ordered me to help you, we helped you, now you're on your own. I'm taking her out the way we came in."

Richard has been asked by Locke to have an audience with Jacob. Richard is initially reluctant but relents at John's persistence. Richard leads the way to the four-toed statue which happens to be the residence of Jacob.

Ilana, a passenger on the Ajira Flight 316, has been recruited by Jacob to come to the island. Ilana wants to know which person is Ricardus. Richard replies, "It's Richard, actually," whereupon Ilana asks Richard the enigmatic question, "What lies in the shadow of the statue?" Richard supplies the correct answer in Latin. Convinced of Richard's identity, Ilana proceeds to show Richard the corpse of what appears to be the genuine John Locke.
