"All My Children: Behind the Scenes" Quiz

Walt Willey, who originated the role of Jack Montgomery on "AMC" in 1987, was tapped to host the video, "All My Children: Behind the Scenes." In the video, Willey took viewers inside the "All My Children" studios, for a day, so they could see what goes on behind the cameras.

He interviewed many people, from the casting director to the costume designer to the executive producer, and more. At the end of the video, Willey walked outside the studio and signed autographs for eager fans.

Midway through the video, Walt Willey interviewed "AMC" Executive Producer, Felicia Minei Behr, to ask her some questions on producing the show. Behr said her job was to get everything on the air and to supervise all areas of production, such as costume design, lighting, props, etc. Behr stated that her favorite stories were ones that had emotional depth and where they would reach people that you get them to laugh and cry.

She stated that she felt the head writers, Agnes Nixon and Megan McTavish, accomplished this well and she loved getting such wonderful stories from both of them.

She discussed what happened when the show shot on location and mentioned that costs triple, as well as the workload and tension. However, she said that it was worth it, to tape on location, since the audience had matured over the years that they figured they would tape outside.

Willey went to talk to the show's Casting Director, Judy Blye Wilson, and he asked her what she looked for when a prospective soap actor or actress sent in a resume and a head shot. Judy pointed to a stack of all the resumes she had received, in just one day, and said none of them were from any agency or solicited.

She informed Walt that she looked closely at the person's training and experience and that sometimes you found the right person when it appeared as if their training and experience just lifted itself off the page.

She discussed how she cast John Callahan as Edmund and noted she had to track down Felicia Minei Behr, at an airport, to talk her into casting Callahan. Wilson noted that he was the right man, for the role of Edmund, and that he was very good and how she cast him at the last minute.

She was pleased when Callahan won the role of Edmund.

There was a segment, in the video, where certain performers said what they liked to do on their days off. Eva LaRue and Sarah Michelle Gellar both stated that they liked to talk on the phone. Felicia LaFortune stated that all she did on her days off was do laundry and go shopping. Kelly Ripa, who played Hayley, claimed she just did laundry, slept in, and fed the cat on her days off.

It was James Mitchell who said he liked to go see a movie when he did not have to go to the studio to tape an episode of "All My Children."

Kiberd did an interview and said that he liked to raise money through the use of Trevor's ties. He noted that all of the ties that Trevor wore and did not wear, on the show, were ones that fans sent him. Any tie that did not make it on the show was autographed, by Kiberd, and auctioned off and all proceeds went to UNICEF. For all ties that Kiberd wore, when he taped an episode as Trevor on "AMC", he wrote back to the fan and let him/her know when his/her tie would appear on an "AMC" episode.

Willey interviewed Carol Luiken, who was the Costume Designer for "AMC" at the time, and asked her what she did to select wardrobes for the characters. Luiken stated that she selected clothes that the characters would select for themselves so she said she had to get into the minds, of each character, to figure out which clothes they would like.

She called this method "closet" and we saw many of the clothes she selected for Erica. Carol pulled off a gown, which Erica wore when she danced with Dimitri on her honeymoon in Budapest. Carol noted that she designed the gown off of a dress she saw in a museum in Budapest.

There was a segment, in which certain actors or actresses were asked how they memorized lines, and each of them seemed to have a different way to do it. John Callahan, who played Edmund, said he would simply study the lines the night before and on the day of taping. Kelly Ripa, who played Hayley, said she had a great short term memory and could memorize the lines when walking up the stairs whereas, other times, she would wing it. William Christian, who played Derek, also said he would wing it when it came time to tape. Sydney Penny, who played Julia, said there were sometimes she easily memorized the lines and, when it was more difficult, she would draw pictures in the margins.

It was Felicity LaFortune who said she had to say the lines out loud in order to memorize them.

Henry Kaplan was a longtime director when he worked for "All My Children" for many years. In the video, he did an interview and was shown when he directed scenes that involved Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Kendall, and Rudolf Martin, who played Anton.

He discussed how, on days when he directed an episode of "AMC", he would read through the script, carefully, and think over ways in which to get the stars to move and interact with one another. This process was known as blocking and was usually done right before lunch. We found out that "AMC" had a couple of directors who rotated throughout the week.

A couple of other directors who were interviewed were Christopher Goutman and Conal O'Brien.

Conal O'Brien, "AMC" director, realized that many fans wanted to know how they accomplished the split screen effect. This method was used in scenes when there was one actor or actress who played more than one role (such as David Canary since he played Adam and Stuart, at the time).

He showed an example, of the split screen, when he had Sarah Michelle Gellar (Kendall) and Kelly Ripa (Hayley) act out a scene that would undergo a split screen. He had Kelly say some lines of dialogue and Sarah just sat there and said nothing, which is what she was supposed to do. Conal wanted to tape the scene so that it would appear as if Kelly would be talking to herself.

When they finished taping the scene, it showed Kelly Ripa talking to herself and the split screen was accomplished.

Answer: Dry Rehearsal

At the very beginning of the video, host Walt Willey told the viewers that the very first thing the "AMC" stars did, for each day of taping, was dry rehearsal. In this process, the actors and actresses worked with the director to look at the lines that would be taped that day. Willey commented that this was the first time the directors and the stars would get to work together to accomplish acting out the scenes that would be taped. During dry rehearsal, the stars got to use their script and the directors worked on proper movement and acting techniques for each scene before they were taped. Dress rehearsal happened, near the end of the day, when the stars were in makeup and costume and were not allowed to use their scripts.

The stars that we saw in the video, for dry rehearsal, were Grant Aleksander (Alec), Teresa Blake (Gloria), Rudolf Martin (Anton), and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Kendall).
