Jenny doesn't like flowers and says that she would much prefer to receive chocolates. Pete is surprised that David and Karen have each sent bouquets, neither of them knowing that the other had already sent one! Eventually, the flowers are taken to a nursing home by Pete and Adam.

Jenny is offered a promotion at work but it's in New York. At first she turns it down but then, after losing the baby and realising that she's not entirely happy in her relationship with Pete, she accepts the job and jets off with her son, Adam.

Rachel discovers in series three that she is unable to have children and therefore she and Adam begin the process of adoption, only to discover shortly afterwards that Rachel is pregnant. Adam and Rachel had already begun the adoption process and begun bonding with a seven-year-old girl called Laura whom they want to adopt despite Rachel's pregnancy; however, the agency has different ideas and eventually Adam and Rachel have to accept that it's in Laura's best interest that they stop seeing her.

Karen begins drinking around the time she and David have marital problems. She becomes irritable and this results in Ramona's quitting her job - albeit briefly. Eventually she realises she has a problem and takes steps to stop drinking.

Pete originally buys the dog because he's never been allowed to have a dog before but the dog proves more trouble than it's worth when it is shown to have a bladder problem. Pete attempts to take it to the dog's home with the excuse that it belonged to his mother who can't take care of it any long and that he is unable to care for it because he lives on the 20th floor of a tower block! He is unable to leave the dog however, and eventually gives it to his mother for company in the nursing home.

Jo Ellison is a work colleague and friend of Rachel's who has quit her job and found herself jobless, homeless and broke. She asks Rachel and then Karen if she can stay with them, and when they tell her that it's inconvenient, she ends up with Pete who has just lost David as a housemate. Pete develops a crush on Jo and they later begin dating.

David gets the idea of buying Karen a racehorse whilst visiting the auctions with Pete and Adam. The symbol of the horse on the Ferrari car at the auction is his inspiration. Karen is somewhat shocked to receive 'Lady Perfect', the racehorse, but David sees it as a sure-fire method of impressing potential clients.

He takes a different view when he realises that the racehorse stables will cost 200 pounds per week, having thought that this was the price per month! In Lady Perfect's first race, she goes lame and is unable to continue her racing career.

Pete buys this car at the auction with Adam and David, hoping that it will attract some female attention. Adam is deeply envious of the car since he realises that his becoming a family man means that his next car is more likely to be a Volvo than a sporty two-seater! Pete doesn't want to let Adam drive the car but Adam borrows it without permission which results in both Adam and Pete reporting the vehicle stolen.

In this episode, Rachel is in New York visiting Jenny, while Karen embarks on an affair with her new boss, Mark, and Jo asks Pete out on a date.

Natalie thrusts a blug bag towards David calling it a 'leaving present' and then walks out of his office. It is only when David's boss speaks that we discover that it's actually Natalie who is leaving because David has been given her job! This was the result of a mistake on David's part because he had accidentally mailed (instead of saved) a memo concerning staff members he considered to overpaid.

Rachel is taken into hospital on Pete and Jo's wedding day and, although premature, the baby survives and is named 'Matthew' after Rachel's grandfather.
