Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams encountered a Detour before they encountered a Road Block in "The Amazing Race 36".

Answer: True

Racers headed out from the starting line in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and drove themselves to the downtown waterfront at the beginning of this season and their very first clue box contained the Detour-- a choice between 'Pick 'Em Up' and 'Pin 'Em Down'.

In 'Pick 'Em Up', teams transported rocking horses from the city's hills down to the waterfront boardwalk to get their clue while in 'Pin 'Em Down' they had to complete a lucha libre-themed memory challenge in Plaza Hidalgo. Both Detour options only had seven slots for teams, first-come-first-serve.
2. Which team was the only one to complete the 'Color Correction' Detour task in Puerto Vallarta (in Leg 2)?

Answer: Sunny and Bizzy

As teams dove into the second half of a double-length day in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, twelve pairs had to choose between two tasks while navigating Isla Cuale. Most teams took a lengthy hike, collecting bundles of balloons through the massive oceanfront park to deliver to a Day of the Dead party, but Sunny and Bizzy stayed put for the 'Color Correction' Detour task, searching for a mismatched colour pattern amongst hundreds of papel picado strands in Lázaro Cárdenas Park.
3. To avoid a physical Detour option after climbing El Peñón de Guatapé in Leg 3, most racers chose to do which of these?

Answer: Cook a meal

Racers had two options when they arrived in the town of Guatapé, and after going up and down the sixty storeys of stairs at the start of the leg, most went straight to the 'Bandeja Paisa' task, cooking three plates of the local meal and spending time with all of its different ingredients to serve the local abeulas. Teams who weren't daunted by the physical instead followed through on 'Yipao', which involved packing Willys Jeeps with a massive amount of supplies. No one completed the latter task.
4. The rebus puzzle teams encountered completing the 'Wall Scribe' Detour task in Colombia had teams determining which of these messages?

Answer: The world is smaller than you think.

Racers had two choices in Comuna 13 of Medellín, Colombia in Leg 4, and while some racers learned how to break dance, the quicker of the two challenges proved to be 'Wall Scribe', which had them solving a lengthy rebus puzzle with clues scattered amongst the vibrant wall murals high up in the neighbourhood. If the racers could recite the mystery phrase ("The world is smaller than you think."), they would be handed their next clue, otherwise they had to settle for a thirty-second breakdancing routine with the locals.
5. In Leg 5, teams completed Detours in Santiago, Chile. One of these had them playing instruments for which local currency?

Answer: Pesos

Racers could be performers or prove their physical prowess in Leg 5 as they chose between 'Perform for Pesos' and 'Climb for Clues'. In 'Perform for Pesos', racers had to become local street performers known as chinchineros. While one played the instruments, the other hustled for cash, earning 2,500 Chilean pesos to trade for another clue.

In 'Climb for Clues', racers instead climbed up the side of an abandoned six storey cement factory to collect race flags to, similarly, trade for a clue.
6. During the Mega Leg in Leg 6 (in Córdoba, Argentina), racers had two Detours. Which of these tasks was not completed by any teams during that time?

Answer: 'Who Did It'

The eight teams racing through Argentina in Leg 6 had to tackle two Detours and two Road Blocks as part of the Mega Leg, meaning they had to be very choosey to get through the day. The first Detour, near the start of the leg, had teams choosing between a physically demanding recycling task (crushing bottles with stationary bikes) or learning how to use bolas while the second had them electing to either learn how to take in evidence at a crime scene or learn cuts of Argentinean beef.

While the first Detour had a nearly even split, the second was not-- no one completed 'Who Did It', the forensic task; Derek and Shelisa, too far behind to select a task, didn't have the opportunity.
7. In Leg 7, teams completed a Detour task in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay themed around which annual event?

Answer: Carnival

Heading into Montevideo's Old City Quarter, racers had to pick up their Detour clues and join the local forty-day Carnival festival, the longest in the world, choosing between tasks titled 'Candombe' and 'Murga', both of which involved cultural activities.

In the former, teams had to learn a routine on a large candombe drum, parading around while getting their syncopations down pat. The latter was a bit more involved for those inclined to using their Spanish since they had to learn a Spanish song and perform it, onstage, with the Murga dancers.
8. As a result of race rules, which team was held back from commencing their Detour task until they could be reunited with their crew in Barbados (in Leg 8)?

Answer: Angie and Danny

Finding a Detour task on Long Bay Beach on the southern coast of Barbados, racers chose between building a fish pot and clearing the beach of sargassum to get their final clue of Leg 8. Most teams took the former option while only Juan and Shane completed the latter.

The bigger issue of note occurred en route to the Detour as Angie and Danny, taking a turn on a roundabout, accidentally lost their crew and were required (per race rules) to wait until they were reunited. As such, they could not commence the Detour until that occurred, dropping them several spots in the standings.
9. The final Detour of the race was held in the Dominican Republic in Leg 10. Which task did all four teams pursue?

Answer: 'Rum Sip'

The final Detour of the race, located on the beaches of Sosúa in the Dominican Republic, had teams using an eye for detail in either case. While teams could have assembled dive rigs for the 'Dive Trip' Detour option, all four pairs instead went with 'Rum Sip', a task that had them working behind the bar for the true Caribbean tourism experience. For this challenge, racers had to mix six drinks and serve them to pirates waiting to quench their thirst.
10. This season featured no U-Turns or Double U-Turns.

Answer: True

Although the race featured numerous Detour tasks, this was one of a handful of seasons that did not feature any opportunities for teams to hinder others with race mechanics like U-Turns (which have a selected trailing team complete both sides of the Detour).

The reasoning behind this is simpler than just arbitrary omission; production for this season took place towards the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic, and removing the U-Turn was doing to streamline the legs and reduce instances where teams risked additional contact with others.
