Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the season 1 episode "Jones", Detective Goren reveals to Henry Talbott that he wears size 13 shoes. What was Talbott's occupation, making it perhaps surprising that Talbott was found guilty at the episode's end?

Answer: Lawyer

"Jones" is the fifth episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". Detectives Goren and Eames suspect that the same killer has been murdering multiple women. The detectives then find that these women were all girlfriends of personal injury lawyer Henry Talbott (played by Griffin Dunne). Talbott turns out to be a corrupt lawyer who had sex with clients and stole from them. During an interrogation, Detective Goren teases the suspect for being "a little guy" and mocks him by displaying his own size 13 shoes, as well as laughing at Talbott's "small hands".
2. Which character from the original "Law & Order", played by S. Epatha Merkerson, makes a guest appearance in the twentieth episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent", titled "Badge?

Answer: Lieutenant Anita Van Buren

"Badge" is the twentieth episode of season 1 of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". In this episode, the major case squad investigates a case that leads to the discovery of corrupt police officers, including Detective Eames' father. Mr. Eames got in trouble for "double-dipping" after his retirement; that is, he was receiving a pension from the city while at the same time being paid by the city for working in its parks. Lieutenant Anita Van Buren, who is the iconic leader from the original "Law & Order" show, makes a special appearance in this episode, the only time the character appears on "Criminal Intent".
3. According to Detective Goren, which of these is his "most important investigative tool"? (a bibliophile might concur!)

Answer: His library card

Detective Robert Goren, played by Vincent D'Onofrio, is one of the main characters of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". Goren is an extremely intelligent detective whose knowledge of human psychology helps him solve complicated crimes. Goren is dedicated and methodical, though he also occasionally loses his temper.

In the season 2 episode "Dead", which was that season's premiere, Goren says that his library card is his most important investigative tool. Given the breadth of knowledge that Goren exhibits throughout the series, that might as well be true!
4. What guest star made her first "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" appearance in the episode "Anti-Thesis", playing college professor Nicole Wallace?

Answer: Olivia d'Abo

Olivia d'Abo is a British actress who owes some of her fame to her role as Nicole Wallace in "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". Supposedly from Australia, Wallace works as a university professor under the alias of Elizabeth Hitchens. In "Anti-Thesis", she evades capture, which would be the start of a "nemesis-type" relationship between her and Detective Goren. In the seventh season episode "Frame", Nicole is murdered by former FBI profiler Dr. Declan Gage.

Olivia d'Abo was slated to star in "The Whole Wide World" with Vincent D'Onofrio but was replaced by Renee Zellweger.
5. Which very personal detail of Detective Goren's life is revealed by Nicole Wallace in the episode "Anti-Thesis"?

Answer: His Social Security Number

"Anti-Thesis" is the birth of a series-long rivalry between Detective Goren and criminal Nicole Wallace. When a university president is murdered, the Major Case Squad is charged with investigating what happened. This leads Detectives Goren and Eames to Nicole Wallace, a visiting professor who is eventually revealed as a criminal mastermind.

At one point in the episode, Wallace shows Goren a sheet of paper that has Goren's middle initial (an "O"), his birthdate (August 20, 1961), and his Social Security Number, which most Americans consider a very private piece of information. Perhaps this is why Goren would say, referring to Wallace, that "this woman's very, very good!"
6. When discussing "Moby Dick" with Elizabeth Hitchens, Detective Goren asserts that "sometimes a ___ is just a ___". Which word completes Goren's sentence?

Answer: Whale

Detective Goren says this in the episode titled "Anti-Thesis" after he sits in on Elizabeth Hitchens's class about "Moby Dick." Of course, we would later find out that Hitchens is actually Nicole Wallace, an Australian criminal mastermind. Wallace challenges her students (and Goren, apparently) to analyze Captain Ahab's obsession with Moby Dick.

But Goren, cynical as always, responds that "sometimes a whale is just a whale". Nicole Wallace's response is equally thought-provoking: "nothing is ever just something".
7. In the season 2 episode "The Pilgrim," which of the following was the target of Jorge's terrorist plot that did not succeed because he was killed by a sniper?

Answer: Veterans Day Parade

"The Pilgrim" was the eighth episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" season 2. It begins with Detectives Goren and Eames trying to locate the missing daughter of a former police officer. Their investigation takes a stunning turn when they find out that Jorge, the missing woman's boyfriend, was involved in a terrorist plot to detonate explosives at a Veterans Day Parade. The attack is foiled just in time when, during a struggle between Jorge and Detective Goren, the criminal is shot dead by a sniper.

The episode first aired in November 2002, just over a year after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. The suspect in "The Pilgrim" was a white American who turned into a Muslim extremist. Interestingly, there are other episodes in the "Law & Order" franchise (such as "American Jihad" in the original series and "Sylmar" in "Law & Order: LA") that also revolve around the theme of white Americans who become radical Islamic terrorists.
8. In the season 2 episode "Cuba Libre", Joel Grey plays which of the following villainous and paranoid characters?

Answer: Milton Winters

Joel Grey is a prolific actor and singer whose credits include "Man on a Swing", "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins", "Dallas", and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Grey won an Academy Award (or Oscar) for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film "Cabaret". Grey has appeared in many more television series as a guest star, which includes a season 2 episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" in 2003.

In "Cuba Libre", Grey played a clothes designer called Milton Winters Sr. Winters was paranoid and believed people wanted to kill him. In the episode, he is framed while in prison by a drug lord who ordered a hit on Winters' son, Milton Jr., which fell short of succeeding.
9. In the "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" season 2 episode titled "Cold Comfort", which important government office did Randolph Kittridge hold before his death?

Answer: Senator

"Cold Comfort" is the seventeenth episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" season 2. The story begins with the finding of a dead woman's body, who turns out to be the daughter of U.S. Senator Randolph Kittridge, who had recently died before her. The episode evolves into a cryogenics-inspired arc because Detectives Goren and Eames discover that the victim wanted her and her father's bodies cryogenically frozen after death. Jack Kittridge, the deceased Senator's son, was running for a Senate position himself in this episode.

However, it is later revealed that the two were actually not biologically related, and Jack was blackmailed with the threat of revealing this information to the public.
10. In the episode "Legion" Goren becomes fascinated by a keyboard key that says what when pressed?

Answer: "Baby!"

"Legion" is the eighteenth episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" season 2. The episode has Detectives Goren and Eames investigating a neighborhood from which many children and teenagers have gone missing. At one point in the episode, Goren has an interaction with a keyboard that exclaims "Baby!" when a key is pressed.

When that happens, Goren smiles and says "I like that!" Ultimately, the NYPD finds that a powerful gang was in charge of the neighborhood and was involved in the murders.
