3. What are the TV shows "Dragons' Den" and "Shark Tank" about?

Answer: Business investments

"Dragons' Den" (in the UK) and "Shark Tank" (in the US) are essentially the same format of show but with a different name. In basic terms, contestants make a business pitch to a group of investors and finish by asking for an amount of money in exchange for an equity share of the business.

The investors then scrutinise the business idea, its financial history (and/or projections) and the pitcher themselves before deciding if they want to make an offer.

5. The Canadian detective/sci-fi television series "Murdoch Mysteries" takes place in which large, bustling city in Ontario in the 1890s-1900s?

Answer: Toronto

Since it premiered in 2008, "Murdoch Mysteries" has combined detective, historical, and science fiction (almost steampunk) to create a show appealing to multiple demographics. Detective William Murdoch, a polymath, solves crimes through meticulous observation and logical thinking, and in doing so he sometimes invents precursors to contemporary devices such as night-vision goggles. Murdoch's love interest is Dr. Julia Ogden, a pathologist for much of the series' run. Though a murder mystery, the program is full of humor, deliberate anachronisms, and cultural and technological references to the future ("What if we had a web of telegraph networks? And made it worldwide?" asked Constable George Crabtree in one episode). Characters from history, such as Henry Ford, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Mark Twain (played by William Shatner), appear in the show and even assist Murdoch.

It originally aired on CityTV in Canada but switched to CBC at season 6.

6. Which US singer played Leather Tuscadero in the television show "Happy Days"?

Answer: Suzi Quatro

Suzi Quatro played Leather Tuscadero in "Happy Days", the younger sister of Fonzie's girlfriend Pinky Tuscadero. Although not achieving great success as a singer in the US, Suzi Quatro enjoyed musical success in Europe and Australia and had several number one hits including "Can the Can".

7. The name Emma had a surge in popularity from the 90s to the 2000s with more than 3 times the number of baby girls born with that name in the US. Which TV show likely contributed to that when two of the main characters named their baby daughter Emma?

Answer: Friends

The episode of "Friends" titled "The One Where Rachel Has a Baby: Part 2" first aired on May 16, 2002. Rachel finally gave birth to her and Ross's child and they named her Emma. According to the U.S. Social Security Administration, in the 1990s, Emma was ranked as the 56th most popular girl's name with 58,088 baby girls born named Emma. Jump to the 2000s, and Emma was the 3rd most popular girl's name with 181,098 baby girls born with the name.

A likely example of life imitating art.

8. If you were viewing television in France and heard the host, dressed in black, say "Vous etes le mailon faible, au revoir!", which originally Anglo game show would you be watching?

Answer: The Weakest Link

"The Weakest Link" was first broadcast by the BBC in Britain in 2000. It featured a number of contestants answering questions by the fearsome host, Anne Robinson. She always dressed in black and was noted for mean, sometimes cruel, putdowns of failure.

Contestants who left the show were told by her "You are the weakest link, goodbye". The show was quickly picked up by US television, and also featured Robinson as host. It was to go on to be broadcast in 45 countries with local hosts, making it the second most aired gameshow franchise ever.

As part of the licensing agreement the BBC, at least initially, insisted that the host should always dress in black, be mean, and send contestants off with the familiar tagline, in their own language.

If you got this question wrong, then as our Spanish friends would say, "Eres el rival mas debil, adios!"
