Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season featured eighteen new players split into how many tribes?

Answer: Three

Eighteen new players arrived fresh off the boats in Fiji already split into three separate tribes, Taku (in yellow), Vati (in green), and Ika (in blue). After some short introductions, the tribes launched into their very first challenge fighting for reward in the form of flint, one pot, and one machete. The losing tribes still had the chance to get their own by completing a 'Savvy' or 'Sweat' prompted challenge back at camp (all of them chose the 'Savvy' puzzle).

The real kicker was that, just like in "Survivor 41" before it, this season had the players working on the shortened 26-day timeline and with no rice as provision.
2. On Day 3, one castaway was removed from the game for which of the following reasons?

Answer: Medical

Although Daniel dislocated his shoulder on the first challenge, he managed to recover with the help of medics and rejoin the game without issue.

It was Jackson, on Day 3, who was removed from the game due to unrelated medical issues arising from withdrawals from lithium. Though crew had monitored Jackson for several days, the non-disclosure of this medical history was an issue; they would not have been able to continue with the casting process. On Day 3, Jeff arrived at camp to remove them from the game altogether, leaving the Taku tribe one-person-down. Jackson was the first castaway in the history of the show never to compete in an Immunity Challenge.
3. How many people managed to opt in for the 'Advantage Amulet' on the first day of the competition?

Answer: Three

The very first challenge (for flint and supplies) included a bit of a twist wherein three castaways (one from each tribe) were presented with the opportunity to claim an 'Advantage Amulet'. Lindsay, Drea, and Hai all agreed to go for it and vie for stronger and stronger advantages as a the game proceeded.

With all three of them in the game, the amulet would be considered extra votes; with two left, they were steal-a-votes; with one left in the game, it would be considered a full Immunity Idol, usable until only six remained in the game.

The Advantage Amulet was never played; Lindsay ended up with the full idol version, but had Immunity going into the final six.
4. How many players utilized the Shot in the Dark this season?

Answer: Four

Just as in "Survivor 41", the Shot in the Dark twist returned, allowing all castaways to give up their vote at Tribal Council for a 1-in-6 shot at Immunity. Announced at the first Immunity Challenge, the twist was used by numerous players across the season (unlike in the previous season, where it was used once).

In "Survivor 42", it was pursued four times-- once by Zach, once by Marya, once by Swati, and once by Tori. In each case, the castaway was still eliminated; none of them drew the safe scroll.
5. On Day 7, Tribal Council saw several tie votes. Did this result in the tribe drawing rocks?

Answer: No

Vati lost their first (hard-fought) Immunity Challenge on Day 7 and it led to a complicated ordeal at their first Tribal Council. In addition to Mike being unable to vote due to a found Beware Advantage, Chanelle lost her vote playing the Prisoner's Dilemma game at a summit with Omar.

At Tribal Council, it meant that only four players were able to vote, and when they did, they tied with two for Jenny and two for Lydia. Upon a revote, Daniel and Hai both tied again, leaving another deadlock. Jeff forced them to make a unanimous decision; if the two players couldn't decide who left, then Jenny and Lydia would become immune and the others would draw rocks. Daniel changed his vote to avoid this, ultimately sending Jenny home.
6. The Hourglass twist returned in this season. Who smashed the Hourglass?

Answer: Rocksroy

Like in "Survivor 41", castaways were brought together on Day 12 for what they believed would be a merge. They found out that, instead, once they dropped their buffs, they would have to earn their way to the merge. Castaways drew rocks to divide on one of two teams, but two players, Lindsay and Rocksroy, drew odd rocks.

The winning team, believing themselves to be safe, sent Rocksroy to Exile Island knowing he would have a choice before him. On Exile he was given the Hourglass choice, able to give himself and the losing team Immunity.

He smashed it, sending the earlier winners into a new Immunity Challenge and putting them at risk at the next Tribal Council.
7. The merged tribe (of eleven people) went by which name?

Answer: Kula Kula

Immediately after Lydia's elimination on Day 14, the tribes were finally inducted into the merged tribe, uniting at the Vati camp to finish out most of the back half of the game. Going into the individual stretch, all three possessors of the Advantage Amulet were still in the game, all Beware Advantage users were still present, and some of the game's extra votes still had yet to be cast.

As a tribe, Kula Kula donned purple buffs.
8. Day 17 saw an instance in which no formal vote was cast to eliminate a castaway. Who went home as a result of this?

Answer: Tori

It was actually a much more significant circumstance than this as, when the castaways hit the Immunity Challenge on Day 17, they were informed that they would be split into two groups, both eligible for individual Immunity Necklaces, but both of whom would be heading to separate Tribal Councils.

The first of these saw a unanimous vote to eliminate Rocksroy from the game, but the second was much more tense as not only did Jonathan come in with Immunity, but Drea and Maryanne used their own hidden Immunities to protect themselves, avoiding a third black castaway being voted out in a row and leaving only Tori and Lindsay up for contention. Tori played her Shot in the Dark when a unanimous verbal vote was called, but failed to obtain safety.
9. Lindsay was the player to face the Do or Die twist this season. Did she survive it?

Answer: Yes

With only seven players left in the game, Jeff sprung the 'Do or Die' twist on the tribe on Day 21 when they attended the Immunity Challenge, and players could either compete, risking the Do or Die challenge by being the first out, or they could opt out entirely, losing their chance at Immunity but keeping them away from the twist. Only Jonathan and Lindsay competed in the challenge and Lindsay ended up being the first to drop out, facing the 1-in-3 'Monty Hall' problem at Tribal Council. Fortunately, she managed to come out of it safely and Drea was sent to the jury instead.
10. Who was the Sole Survivor of "Survivor 42"?

Answer: Maryanne

Not only did the players of the final five need to start over at a new camp in their final days in the game, but they had to contend with a handful of final challenges and the requisite firemaking challenge at the penultimate Tribal Council. All of it culminated in Romeo bringing Maryanne to the final Tribal and Mike earning his spot by beating Jonathan making fire.

In the final deliberations, it was Maryanne who took seven of the eight jury votes (to Mike's one and Romeo's none) with the jurors praising her social game against Mike and Romeo's attitudes and brashness. She became the second Canadian in a row to win the million dollar prize and the second black woman (after Vecepia in "Marquesas") to become Sole Survivor.
