Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season of "Survivor" commenced with how many tribes?

Answer: Three

Starting off with new set of eighteen strangers, the show marooned its contestants on Fiji's Mamanuca Islands for another social experiment/competition. Coming out to the starting beach, they were already split into three tribes, the standard for this era of the game.

In orange buffs, Coming out to the starting beach already split into three tribes-- Ratu in orange buffs, Soka in green, and Tika in purple. Naturally, the tribes headed into their first challenge immediately, competing for the chance at reward, a 'Sweat'/'Savvy' challenge option, summits, and the maps to their campsites.
2. Two contestants left the game this season due to injury. The first was on Day 1.

Answer: True

From the word 'go', things were quite difficult for the contestants. As soon as Jeff gave his ready for the first Reward Challenge, before tribes even headed to their camps for the first time, Bruce hit his head on one of the obstacles, getting a near-immediate check from medics before the competition could get underway. Bruce was deemed alright to head back to camp with the Tika tribe, but that night, the "Survivor" medical team, fearing lasting effects, pulled him from the game to take to a hospital.

The other tribes didn't find out until the first Immunity Challenge on Day 3.
3. Each camp that tribes lived at in the competition had which of these located nearby?

Answer: A birdcage

Once the tribes had the chance to look over their camps on the first day, they found a padlocked birdcage in the jungle containing a wrapped package. What players needed to do was locate a key hidden in the jungle around their campsite to unlock the cage and gain the mystery contents, later revealed to be a Hidden Immunity Idol as well as a fake trinket that they could use for whatever purpose would serve them. Brandon, Carolyn, and Danny ended up opening these first.

The Birdcage appeared later in the game, again, hiding a 'Control a Vote' Advantage (won by Heidi).
4. On Day 8, tribes faced an unexpected tribal shake-up. When did it occur?

Answer: On a journey

On Day 8, the tribes headed to Reward Challenge and the winning tribe, Soka, needed to make a decision that would affect the game going forward. Sending Carson, Jaime, and Josh on a journey, all three ended up receiving a Hidden Immunity Idol that would be good until the inevitable merge.

The catch was that they also received a new buff and a spot on a different tribe with Carson headed to Ratu, Jaime to Soka, and Josh to Tika. There were no other tribe reshufflings this season.
5. Did any player utilize the Inheritance Advantage this season?

Answer: No

At the very first journey of the game, wherein three players headed to a new island for a trek on Day 2, Sarah managed to draw the Inheritance Advantage, granting her the ability to take all advantages played at a single Tribal Council of her choosing. The catch was that she never used it, getting blindsided and eliminated from the game on Day 9 when Josh used his Immunity Idol from the next journey.

At the same journey, Matt lost two votes at later Tribal Councils, inadvertently not being able to vote until the one he was eliminated on, while Lauren got the Bank Your Vote Advantage.
6. Which player removed themself from the game on Day 11?

Answer: Matthew

After sustaining a rough injury falling from a seaside rock edifice on Day 2, Matthew managed to fix his own dislocated shoulder but was still checked on by the medical team. They allowed him to continue playing the game, but with his arm in a sling (though he did remove this on several occasions for challenges). Matthew continued to push through in an immense amount of pain, lasting until Day 11 before he threw in the towel. No Tribal Council was had this stretch, sparing Tika from another elimination (as Matthew, and Ratu, had immunity).
7. At the merge, the resultant tribe took on what name, Fijian for the number 'forty-four'?

Answer: Va Va

Day 12 was the notable day on which all three tribes converged on Ratu's beach and were told to drop their buffs to commence the back half of the game. They had a full day to get to know each other and integrate into their new tribe mates' plans, but the union was complicated by the Immunity Challenge on Day 13 which would only grant safety, buffs, and a merge feast to half of the tribe.

The other six were able to be voted for at Tribal Council (during which Josh was sent home, just short of the merge).

The following day, the team, clad in black buffs, would take the name Va Va.
8. On Day 14, the merged tribe was split back into teams for an Immunity Challenge. How many people were eliminated that evening?

Answer: One

While this type of situation, in this era of "Survivor", would generally result in both 'teams' going to Tribal Council to vote someone out, each side with one Immunity recipient, this season altered the formula. Instead, the tribe with the winner found their entire team immune; they would be able to visit Tribal Council but they would not be able to vote.

They would, instead, be allowed to eat a platter of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The losing team still had to vote amongst themselves.
9. Lauren received the Bank Your Vote Advantage. Heidi received the Control a Vote Advantage. Did either result in successfully eliminating the intended tribemate?

Answer: Neither of them did

While Lauren received the Bank Your Vote Advantage at the first 'summit' journey of the game and banked a vote from her first Tribal Council, she gave it to Jaime to use on Day 17. The both of them attempted to stack votes on Heidi, but Kane took the majority of votes and was eliminated instead.

Heidi, meanwhile, took the Control a Vote Advantage from a birdcage after the merge. On Day 14, when half the tribe was ineligible for voting (and elimination) at Tribal Council, she used this game mechanic to control Lauren's vote, casting it against Yam Yam. Matt was eliminated instead, making him the first member of the jury.
10. Who was the Sole Survivor of "Survivor 44"?

Answer: Yam Yam

As the game headed into the pointy end, the Tika three managed to maneuver their way, socially, into the finale and were foiled by a last-minute Immunity win by Heidi who, despite facing and beating Carson in the semifinal fire-making challenge (with a record three-minute fire), couldn't overcome Yam Yam's social game.

At the last Tribal Council, the jury pushed all three players to elaborate on their moves and successes in the game, celebrating each of them with good-spirited sportsmanship, and they gave Yam Yam the grand prize with a vote of 6-1-0 (with Heidi receiving the sole outlying vote).

He would become the first Puerto Rican winner of the game.
