Knowing the married members would never convince their wives to let them go alone, the Poobah had them pretend to be sick so that another lodge member posing as a doctor could come and prescribe a three-day rest away from home.
But he didn't count on Flintstone's talking Dodo bird blabbing.

Doozy chose the moment right after he overheard Fred and Barney talking about the convention and the phony doctor that was supposed to stop buy to start talking again. Fred and Barney were scared to death that Doozy would blab the whole thing to their wives.

As crazy as it sounds, it looked like the scheme worked. Wilma and Betty apparently bought the doctor's story and the boys' act.

Fred and Barney didn't give their wives the slip for very long, because Doozy was right there when Fred told Barney to duck under the boardwalk. He immediately told Wilma and Betty, causing Barney to note that Doozy seemed more like a stool pigeon than a dodo bird.
The truth is Dodo birds were the largest members of the pigeon family.

Barney and Fred wound up underwater trying to hide from their wives, who were sitting on the beach nearby. Wilma waved a club and pointed out that though both men were very good underwater swimmers, they would have to come up sometime.
