Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Dutton III
Answer: Yellowstone
What a complicated man! The main character in "Yellowstone", John Dutton III loves his family and loves the land - but to the point where he will do absolutely anything necessary to protect both. Sometimes this makes him more of a villain than a hero. For example, he actively disposes of the bodies of the people who die on his ranch in the train station, a piece of property in Wyoming near its border with Montana; the first such disposition was in season 1/episode 4. The area has no population and no law enforcement.
By season 5/episode 1, John has been elected governor of Montana, which gives him more power and more situations that must be manipulated from time to time. Will his political opponents and maybe even family members end up at the train station? Only time will tell.
2. Kacey Dutton
Answer: Yellowstone
At the beginning of the first season of "Yellowstone" Kacey appears to be a reluctant Dutton. He has been away from the ranch for a time, serving as a Navy Seal. This training has provided Kacey with skills that ordinary people do not possess, as in season 1/episode 3. He is more than able to help defend the ranch. In addition, he is not on the best of terms with his father, who objects to his marriage to a Native American woman who is from the nearby reservation.
Much of Casey's story in the "Yellowstone" story has to do with coming to grips with who he is within the extended family and also within his own family. In the first part of season 5, he is back actively working at the ranch, and his family is preparing to live there once again. But his initiation into his wife's tribe, season 4/episode 10, leaves him feeling that the end of something is near.
3. Margaret Dutton
Answer: 1883
What a lady! Margaret has firm values, but cannot stand her pious, stuffy sister-in-law. She isn't sure that she wants to leave home, but her husband just can't shake the memories of all that happened during the Civil War. They need a new start.
When another cowhand is needed, Margaret can ride and do the work (episode 3). When she is needed to drive the wagon across the river, she does it (episode 4). When she is needed to fight, she can "fight like a panther" (episode 5). And - when she must say goodbye to her daughter (episode 10) - she does. As the matriarch of the Dutton family line in Montana, Margaret sets a fine example for others to follow.
4. Elsa Dutton
Answer: 1883
While it is clear that Elsa has been brought up to be a Southern belle, she also has a bit of a wild side. She can play Beethoven (episode 4), but she easily becomes a cowgirl when the wagon train needs another helper to herd cattle on the long trip to Oregon (episode 5). Elsa quickly embraces the freedom that the West has to offer, and, even, after marrying a Comanche husband, adopts a different style of clothing (episode 8).
Elsa's spirit is the narrator of both "1883" and "1923". The first episode of "1883" foreshadows her death as the result of a battle with Native Americans, however, the details become clear in episode 9. Although it is disappointing that the brave and beautiful Elsa is not a more direct ancestor to John Dutton III - she is his great aunt - her death establishes the cemetery that is shown on several occasions throughout the remainder of the series. In addition, it establishes the location of the family ranch in Montana, in a place the Crow call Paradise Valley, as her parents agreed that they would stay wherever she died.
5. James Dutton
Answer: 1883
James fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War and spent some time in a Union prisoner-of-war camp. He is tough and able but needs to get away from some of his terrible memories as shown in episode 2. Life in Tennessee after the war isn't easy, but then again, neither is going West.
The family joins a wagon train going to Oregon, and James is hired to help (episode 1), but at first he ends up constantly butting heads with the wagon train's leader, Shea. They fought on different sides of the Civil War, and that is difficult, even by the 1880s, to overlook. As they work together, the two reconcile their differences.
Viewers are told in flashbacks in "Yellowstone" that James keeps his promise to the Crow, who told him about Paradise Valley, in allowing the people to be on his property (season 4/episode 2), and that James becomes part of a law enforcement group in Montana (season 4/episode 8).
6. Jacob Dutton
Answer: 1923
Jacob Dutton is James Dutton's brother. After James's death, Margaret writes to her brother-in-law and asks him to come to Paradise Valley to help with the ranch. When he and his wife arrive on the ranch in 1894, they find that James and Margaret's sons, John and Spencer, are orphans.
Jacob is the person who takes the homestead in Paradise Valley and turns it into a thriving ranch. He is also the person who establishes the Dutton family's political hold in the area, as he is a livestock commissioner. But all is not smooth sailing for Jacob, as he deals with drought, Prohibition, and the early stages of the Depression (season 1) that hits Montana before the rest of the country.
7. Cara Dutton
Answer: 1923
Cara Dutton, originally from Ireland, is Jacob's wife and James Dutton's sister-in-law. The couple is childless, but are happy to take in and raise John and Spencer, James and Margaret's sons. Those boys become Cara's sons, and their children are her grandchildren.
In season 1/episode 1 it is plain to see that Cara Dutton is just as tough as Margaret, her sister-in-law. She is shown shooting a man who has attacked the Dutton family in some way, however, it is not quite clear who exactly has been injured or what the outcome will be.
8. Jack Dutton
Answer: 1923
Jack Dutton is the son of John Dutton (usually listed on the Dutton family tree as John Sr.), who traveled by wagon train to Paradise Valley with his dad, mom, and sister in "1883". Jack's father is killed in an ambush in "1923" (season 1/episode 3), leaving behind both Jack and his wife, Emma.
Jack is brought up on the ranch and works there; he marries a local girl named Elizabeth. He is deeply embroiled in a feud with the local sheepherders who want to pasture their animals on the ranch. Fans have been left to decide how Jack might be related to John Dutton III; while sites claim that Jack is actually John, Jr., others say that the honor of being John III's father goes to Jack's son. Time will tell.
9. Beth Dutton
Answer: Yellowstone
Beth carries a heavy burden. Even though it has been years since her mother's death, she still feels responsible. Why? In a flashback shown in season 1/episode 3, her mother blames her before she died.
Beth, however, has become a great business person; her father is lucky to have her help with the financial problems that the ranch faces. She continues to have personal issues caused by past choices made, and carries on a very violent, public fight with one of her brothers, the origin of which is revealed in season 3/episode 5. But will her father allow her to guide him to a moneymaking situation that seems very foreign to him (season 5/episode 7)?
10. Jamie Dutton
Answer: Yellowstone
Jamie comes off in the very beginning (season 1/episode 1) of "Yellowstone" as being a very intelligent, impressive Harvard-trained lawyer. He is successful in mitigating any legal problem his family may have. And, as the Attorney General of the State of Montana, he is in a position where he can gain even more political power.
But Jamie is haunted by a poor decision that was made in the past when he was a young man. And - from time to time he falls out of his father, John III's good grace, and must once again prove himself. In addition to that, he discovers a family secret (season 3/episode 7) that just may destroy his life.
