Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pinkerton agent, a leader of the wagon train

Answer: Shea

Shea Brennan currently works for the Pinkerton Agency, but in the past he served in the Union Army. When the story begins in episode 1, he has just lost his wife and daughter to smallpox, and is burning down their home to avoid further transmittal of the disease. He is also contemplating his own death, but is reminded that he has a job to do.

Shea is capable and knowledgeable, but in his charge is a group of immigrants who mostly can't speak or understand English, and know very little about the freedoms that can be found in the West. He doesn't always trust them, and they don't always trust him. At one point, he relinquishes his leadership role to James Dutton (episode 8), but, in the end, he keeps his promise to the wagon train, and sees that the people who wanted to settle in Oregon made it there.
2. Former Buffalo soldier, Pinkerton agent

Answer: Thomas

Thomas has been friends with Shea for many years, and their easy camaraderie and trust are apparent. Like Shea, Thomas has a lot of knowledge and ability; he learned many skills while in the Union army. He is good in a fight, and also knows what to do in a crisis situation. When one of the immigrants needs to have his leg amputated, it seems that Thomas is the one who knows what to do.

Thomas offers to help a young Romani woman in the wagon train after her husband was killed on the trail (episode 4). While it is apparent that he hasn't had much romance in his life, he does apparently fall in love (episode 6), and the two are seen at the end of the series choosing land in Oregon where they plan to build a home.
3. Carpenter, translator for immigrants

Answer: Josef

Josef is the leader of the immigrants in the wagon train, not because he is a good leader, but because he can speak English. He is held back by the traditions of his native country, which compel people of a certain class to live a certain way, but he does step up and initiate action when he finds out that one of the immigrants is stealing food (episode 5).

Unfortunately, Josef is bitten by a rattlesnake on the last part of the wagon train's journey to Oregon (episode 9). His leg has to be amputated, but he survives. He is shown in one of the last scenes of the final episode, a year later, using crutches and appearing to build himself a home. He is one of the few who make it to the final destination.
4. Cowboy, Elsa's first love on the trail

Answer: Ennis

Ennis is a young cowboy whose enthusiasm and charm make up for his lack of skill. He is hired to help drive the cattle for the wagon train and provide protection. When the lovely Elsa Dutton rides forward to help with the cattle (episode 3), Ennis is obviously enamored of her.

Although Elsa makes it clear that she is old enough and doesn't need her parents' permission, her father, James, reluctantly tells Ennis that he has his permission to court his daughter. Sadly, that very day Ennis is killed while protecting the people from an attack by bandits; he saves Elsa's life before receiving a fatal wound (episode 5).
5. Comanche warrior, Elsa's husband

Answer: Sam

The wagon train pays a tax to the Comanche to cross their land (episode 7). Shortly after Elsa and Sam meet, they discover that they have something in common - they have both recently lost loved ones. In fact, Sam told Elsa that he took the name of the man who killed his wife - before he killed him. Sam names Elsa "Lightning With The Yellow Hair", after the two raced their horses, and they fall in love.

Sam also provides Elsa with some different clothes, and she very easily learns to adopt Comanche culture. The two marry, but part ways after Elsa says she will go to Oregon with her family, and then return to live with Sam (episode 8).

At the end of episode 10, "This Is Not Your Heaven", it is clear that Sam is in Elsa's heaven.
6. Josef's wife, seamstress

Answer: Risa

Risa was a seamstress in the old country, and is hoping to begin a new life in Oregon with her husband, Josef.

Like the other immigrants in the wagon train, Risa alternates between walking and riding in the wagon on the trail. After the group acquires horses, Risa is delighted to discover that she can ride - after all, peasants in her homeland weren't allowed to ride horses. Unfortunately, she suffers a concussion after being thrown from her horse after it was startled by a rattlesnake along the trail (episode 9). By the end of the series, Risa succumbs to her wound.
7. Romani woman, husband dies on the trail

Answer: Noemi

Noemi's situation is one that was certainly faced by many pioneers trying to reach land in the West. Her husband is killed on the trail (episode 3), and she is left alone with two young sons to care for and raise. Noemi views her situation as hopeless, not knowing how she will manage on her own.

She does try her best to learn as much as she can - like how to shoot a rifle; she is, however, essentially saved when Thomas offers to help drive her wagon (episode 9). In the end Noemi finds that she is much stronger than she ever imagined. Her friends want to continue the journey, but both are unable to drive their wagon. Noemi does it for them.
8. Young Dutton son, makes journey with family

Answer: John

John Dutton, who is typically called John Dutton, Sr. in the "Yellowstone" universe, is five years old when his family leaves Tennessee to begin a new life out West. He is extremely well behaved, and has learned to mind his parents immediately when asked to do something.

On the trip, he goes hunting with his father, James, (episode 3) and learns the ritual associated with killing a deer, namely blooding. Some of the deer's blood is wiped on the hunter's face in order to honor the animal and see that it continues to thrive. Fans of "Yellowstone" (season 2, episode 6) saw this very same ritual enacted by Kacey and his young son, Tate.

According to the information learned in the narration of "1923", John's parents lived for another ten years before succumbing to horse thieves (James) and the terrible winter (Margaret). John and his brother, Spencer, are left to survive on their own for a time, were rescued and raised by their Uncle Jacob and Aunt Cara.
9. Experienced cowboy, from Texas

Answer: Wade

Wade was an experienced cowboy who was hired in Texas to help move the cattle for the wagon train and protect the people. He appears to be the quintessential cowboy; he is calm in the face of danger, capable, dedicated to his profession, and keeps his commitment to the people in the wagon train.

Wade's best scene is toward the end of the series in "1883" (episode 10). He has always been indulgent toward Elsa's work as a cowgirl, but he obviously also respects and admires her. As she is dying in her family's wagon, Wade, who is released from his obligation to the wagon train by Shea, is sure to tell her goodbye, saying, "It's been a hell of a thing ridin' with you".
10. Shopkeeper in Texas, befriends Margaret

Answer: Carolyn

Carolyn is a shopkeeper in the small settlement of Doan's Crossing, which is located on the border between Texas and Oklahoma (episode 6). Margaret Dutton goes to the store to buy provisions after her daughter creates quite a scene. Carolyn inadvertently insults Margaret's mothering ability, and offers whisky punch and the last of her ice as an apology. When Margaret's husband, James, becomes concerned as to Margaret's whereabouts, he finds the two women on the porch behind the store more than a little bit wasted!

Meeting Carolyn offers Margaret a short respite from the grueling trip, and gives her someone who can understand the challenges Margaret is facing. By the next morning, Margaret is back to business and apologizes for some things she said the night before. It is time to cross another river!
