Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dutton family patriarch

Answer: John

John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, is a 6th generation rancher in Montana; in fact, he owns the largest ranch in the state - maybe the largest in the entire United States. He must deal with all sorts of threats to his family and ranch, as there are many people who want his land and power. Throughout the first four seasons, the main theme has been how important the land and his family are to him.

I must say, as a fan of Costner for years, that John Dutton might just be the biggest, baddest tough guy that Costner has even played. He even has changed the tone of his voice; he is almost growling when he speaks. While tenderness is shown to his animals and love toward his family (Season 1/Episode 1), there is no mercy shown toward enemies (Season 4/Episode 3). And don't forget - John survived multiple gunshot wounds in an assassination attempt (Season 3/Episode 10), and helped catch the bad guys by leaving a message in the dirt.
2. Ranch foreman

Answer: Rip

John brought Rip Wheeler, played by Cole Hauser, to the ranch as a young boy after the deaths of his parents. Over the years the two have developed a father-son relationship; Rip is totally devoted to the Duttons and is described by some as being the family henchman, even taking the responsibility of executing those who do the family or ranch harm. (Season 2/Episode 9),(Season 4/Episode 1), etc.

It does seem that the Duttons have a propensity toward bringing outcasts and people who are down and out to work on their ranch. Rip, like everyone else, had to work his way toward being the ranch foreman. Even though he has loved her since he was a teenager, Rip has had a long on again off again relationship with the boss's daughter. After she proposes to Rip (Season 3/Episode 10), and he receives her father's blessing, the two finally marry (Season 4/Episode 10).
3. Former Navy SEAL turned Livestock Agent

Answer: Kacey

Kacey, played by Luke Grimes, is the youngest son of the current Dutton clan. He is married to Monica. When the series began, he had left the military and his family lived on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation (Season 1/Episode 1). After being convinced to move back to the Dutton ranch (Season 1/Episode 9), Kacey encountered some rivalry with Rip, whose role as ranch foreman was temporary given to him (Season 2/Episode 2), but the two are able to work together when necessary (Season 2/Episode 9).

Kacey is no slouch himself, after having a job where it was either kill or be killed. His job as Livestock Agent of the Montana Livestock Association, however, has brought added danger to him (Season 3/Episode9), as if being a Dutton wasn't enough. At the end of Season 4 Kacey begins initiation into the tribe. He has to stay in a confined area for four days without food or water
(Episodes 9, 10). His experience seems to be especially troubling, as he tells his wife, I saw "the end of us".
4. Oldest son planned to take over family business

Answer: Lee

For the most part, Lee, played by Dave Annable, is only seen in Season 1/Episode 1 of "Yellowstone". As the oldest son he planned to someday take over control of the ranch from his father. His plans are cut short, however, when he is killed during an altercation with people on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, who had been stealing Dutton cattle. Who shot the fatal bullet? Was it Robert Long, Kacey's brother in law, or was it Lee's brother, Kasey, who was living on the reservation with his wife and young son?

Lee does appear in Season 4/Episode 10 in one of the hallucinations Kacey experienced during his initiation as a warrior into the tribe. Does Lee try to entice Kacey to break the rules of the initiation? Does Lee's presence show that Kacey feels guilt over his brother's death? Perhaps the questions will be answered in Season 5.
5. Ex-con put out a hit contract on Dutton Family

Answer: Garrett

At the end of Season 3, all the members of the immediate Dutton family are attacked - except for one. That one person is the chief suspect for the hit, until it is discovered that Garrett Randall, played by Will Patton, was the one who had ordered it (Season 3/Episode 9). His motive is that he wanted to protect someone that he cared about and regain the family that the Duttons had stolen from him (Season 4/Episode 6).

Randall had served a sentence in the state penitentiary, and was hoping to develop a relationship with a person in the Dutton family. His plan, however, was rejected. Why? Check out Season 4/Episode 10.
6. 2nd son, educated at Harvard Law School

Answer: Jamie

Wes Bentley is Jamie, the Dutton's second son. He was educated at the Harvard Law School and became an attorney, taking care of the family business. (Season 1/Episodes 2,5) His relationship with his father, however, was a bit rocky from time to time, and eventually choose to leave the family home. Having friends in high places helped Jamie to achieve the position of state Attorney General (Season 3/Episode 3).

In Season 3 Jamie uncovers a family secret that changes the course of his life. He also finds that his old girlfriend had his child. He buys his own property and moves away from the Yellowstone. His ongoing fights with his sister also begin to escalate as the cause of the animosity is revealed (Season 3/ Episode 5). Revenge is sweet (Season 4/Episode 10).
7. Chief of Broken Rock Indian Reservation

Answer: Thomas

Chief Thomas Rainwater, played by Gil Birmingham, is one of the Dutton family's enemies in Season 1. He believes that their ranch really belongs to Native Americans, and, as the newly appoint chief of the Broken Rock Reservation, he has a plan. As the Dutton fence is "down", it seems that their cattle are grazing on reservation property, and the Native Americans aren't going to give them up without a fight (Season 1/Episode 1).

Through the first four seasons of Yellowstone, Chief Thomas Rainwater has been both an adversary and ally. He is highly educated, wealthy, and already owns one casino. A huge resort and casino on the Dutton ranch would be very profitable for the Reservation (Season 2/Episode 3). It is difficult to anticipate what this character might do. Others must feel this way too, or else why would he need a bodyguard?
8. Orphan brought to ranch by Dutton daughter

Answer: Carter

Where is Carter's mother? That question has never really been answered. But his father is a drug addict who died shortly after Dutton's daughter met Carter at the hospital. Carter, played by Flynn Little, reminds her of a young Rip. After Carter got into a bit of trouble, she decided to take him to the ranch. It is clear that the kid didn't do very well under foster care (Season 4/Episode 2).

That doesn't mean that Carter is going to have it easy. He has to learn how to get along with his adopted mother and earn the respect of others. That means he must get up early and clean a lot of stalls. Luckily, the family patriarch takes a liking to him - and the feeling is mutual (Season 4/Episode 6 "I Want to Be Him").
9. Currently only recognized Dutton heir

Answer: Tate

Tate, played by Brecken Merrill, is Kacey's son and, as of Season 4, is the only recognized heir to the Dutton fortune. That makes him a bit of a target, and he was kidnapped and held for ransom by businessmen who were interested in taking over the ranch (Season 2/Episode 10). It is apparent that he is cherished and loved by the family patriarch, when he is taken to the ranch's summer camp (Season 3/Episode 2).

But Tate is also apparently targeted in the contract that was put out on Dutton family members. He and his mother were in danger, and he is traumatized once more after he shot their assailant (Season 4/Episode 1). Then the family decides to move from the ranch, buying a "normal home" for Tate - a place where he could have a dog. It is revealed toward the end of Season 4 that Tate will soon have a sibling (Episode 8).
10. Ranch hand sent to Four Sixes

Answer: Jimmy

Jimmy Hurdstram, played by Jefferson White, is another ranch hand who has had a checkered past on "Yellowstone". Constantly in some type of trouble, the Duttons take him in as a favor to his grandfather, even though Jimmy didn't have any discernible cowboys skills (Season 1/Episode 5). In order to help pay off an old debt, Jimmy decides to try rodeo. After a terrible rodeo accident (Season 3/Episode 3), the Duttons offer to pay his hospital bill with the condition that he will quit rodeo.

Jimmy knows, however, that his girlfriend would like him to go back to the rodeo. He tries bronco busting again, and once again he suffers a terrible injury. Unable to trust Jimmy to keep his word, the Duttons sent him to the 6666 Ranch in Texas to learn to be a cowboy. In Season4/Episode 10) Jimmy returns to Yellowstone, only to say goodbye. Some sources have stated that Jimmy and his fiance, Emily, will be characters in a new "Yellowstone" franchise spin-off called "6666".
