Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pallet Town
Your starting location for the game, Pallet Town is where your home is and where Professor Oak will bestow a starter Pokemon upon you (Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle in "Red"/"Blue" or Pikachu by default in "Yellow"). Though the town contains a PokeMart, that's pretty much the only essential to come across here. For all other purposes, you should be heading north out of town to start your journey or using the southern shore as a point embark on the route south...when you get HM03.
2. Viridian City
Although Viridian City is the first 'destination away from home' you'll encounter, it's also one of the last spots to hit as its gym isn't really accessible until after you've claimed the first seven of eight badges across Kanto. This is because the gym here, operated by Giovanni, leader of Team Rocket, won't open until you've encountered Team Rocket behind the Game Corner of Celadon City and in Silph Co. in Saffron City.
At that point in the game you can head east to Victory Road, but for most cases you're northbound to Viridian Forest.
3. Pewter City
The first city in which you'll face a gym (Brock's rock-type gym), Pewter City is on the other side of Viridian Forest from Viridian City and, depending on your starter Pokemon, it's likely you'll make use of the Pokemon in the woods on the way. Pewter City, partly due to its collective fascination with rocks, also contains a Pokemon Museum dedicated to rare fossils.
4. Mt. Moon
The player is forced to cross through Mt. Moon after completing their first gym in Pewter City, and it'll mean facing off against onslaughts of Zubats, Geodudes, and trainers of all sorts in the vast expanses beneath the peak. Of particular note, this large, cavernous area, sitting between Pewter City and Cerulean City, is one of the few places at which you can collect Moon Stones, necessary for evolving a handful of Pokemon found around the adjacent Routes.
5. Cerulean City
Home to the second gym (Misty's water gym), Cerulean City is smack dab in the middle of the northern part of the Kanto map between a number of routes that bring the player to dead ends (Bill's house to the north), tough spots (the Power Plant to the east), and south to the big city (Saffron).
At the same time the destination might be seen as a bit of a respite. Not only does it come after a potentially exhausting trip through Mt. Moon, but it's the hob for anyone headed to the Cerulean Cave, home of Mewtwo.
6. Vermilion City
Though Saffron City will likely be blocked during your first attempt at reaching Vermilion City, a good deal of the way south from Cerulean City, you'll be able to take an underground passage most of the way and emerge into, likely, your third major gym city, home to Lt. Surge and his electric-type facilities.
In addition to a harbour at which the S.S. Anne may be docked, this city is home to the Pokemon Fan Club and offers your likely only opportunity to trade for a Farfetch'd.
7. Celadon City
Celadon City is a pretty significant destination in the games since it contains a fair number of goodies to explore. A sprawling city compared to many others, it's home to not only a multi-level department store, but a Game Corner (nothing nefarious going on there, right?). Players can get the fourth badge-- Erika's Rainbow Badge-- by facing off against grass-type Pokemon. And if you're lucky, you can navigate the city's condominiums to get your own Eevee.
8. Fuchsia City
Technically the home of Koga's poison-type gym (the fifth you're likely to visit), Fuchsia City holds a lot more in terms of exciting to-dos. For instance, in addition to the Pokemon Zoo, this city is the gateway to the Safari Zone, allowing you to head out into a protected wilderness to catch new types of Pokemon. To the south, the beach provides a route to the Seafoam Islands, but only if you can ride the surf.
9. Saffron City
Although Celadon is the largest city in Kanto, Saffron is the most central, providing a massive square of city space in the middle of the map, accessible from all directions provided there's nothing stopping you from entering at the gates. In addition to being the headquarters for Silph Co. (not a shady company at all), this is the only city on the map with two gyms, one of which is a fighting dojo and one of which is home to Sabrina, who uses psychic-type Pokemon in battle.
10. Lavender Town
Lavender Town is a bit of an anomaly because, like Pallet Town, it contains no gym. It does, however, contain the Pokemon Tower, a large high-rise graveyard home to a number of ghost-type Pokemon. You'll need to visit it to claim the Poke Flute from Mr. Fuji, and that'll allow you to wake up the Snorlaxes blocking the routes around the region. You'll likely have to pass through here (taking a trip around from Cerulean City) to get to Celadon City, considering.
11. Cinnabar Island
Home to the penultimate gym on the map (Blaine's fire-type gym), Cinnabar Island can only be reached if you have a Pokemon that can carry you across the surf from Pallet Town or Fuchsia City (via the Seafoam Islands). The island contains a laboratory, but its main point of interest is the burned-out Pokemon Mansion, home to many as-of-yet-unseen fire-type Pokemon.
12. Indigo Plateau
The final destination of the game, the Indigo Plateau is found at the end of Victory Road and is only accessible if you have all your HMs and badges in-hand. At the far end of Victory Road, the Indigo Plateau starts with a Pokemart and a Pokecenter, allowing you to stock up and heal before facing not only the Elite Four, but your rival.
At the end of this you should be able to become a Pokemon Master.
