Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Found in a cave
Answer: Diglett
Diglett is, go figure, found in Diglett's Cave in all three games, appearing frequently if you happen to take the trip from the south of Vermilion City to the south of Pewter City. Number 050 in the Kanto Pokedex, Diglett evolves into Dugtrio at level 26 and based most of its fighting around ground-type attacks.
In fact, Diglett is one of the few Pokémon who can learn Dig, which it does at level 19, in order to burrow underneath an enemy in one round of battle and emerge beneath them to attack in the next, dodging hits in between.
2. An electric-type Pokémon
Answer: Pikachu
Perhaps one of the most famous Pokémon due to its prominence in the "Pokémon" anime, Pikachu is the only starter Pokémon available to the player in "Pokémon Yellow". Number 025 in the Pokedex, Pikachu evolves into Raichu when the player gives it a Thunderstone. Extremely speedy, the agile Pikachu is the earliest in the Pokedex to learn electric-type attacks and has an inherent high speed. You can find him in Viridian Forest or the Power Plant on a rare chance in "Blue" and "Red".
3. Evolves through trading
Answer: Haunter
Haunter is only one of four Pokémon in the first few "Pokémon" games to evolve through trading (via link cable), the others being Kadabra, Machoke, and Graveler. Haunter is a ghost Pokémon is number 093 in the Kanto Pokedex, appearing between its earlier form, Gastly, and its evolved form, Gengar.
The only place you can catch a wild Haunter is in the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town (and you need a Silph Scope to see it).
4. Only capturable in "Pokémon Blue"
Answer: Meowth
Meowth, Pokémon number 052 in the Kanto Pokedex, can only be found in "Pokémon Blue", and not "Red" or "Yellow", at least not in a capturable sense. This cat Pokémon, who evolves into Persian at level 28, appears on Routes 5 through 8 on the map; you can fight it in tall grass. Meowth is probably best known for its Pay Day attack, which hits a foe with coins that can be collected at the end of battle.
5. A legendary bird
Answer: Zapdos
There are three legendary bird Pokémon found in the Kanto region: Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres. While the latter two are found on the Seafoam Islands and Victory Road (respectively), Zapdos, Pokémon number 145 in the Kanto Pokedex, is found in the abandoned Power Plant in the northeast corner of the map.
6. Learns Confusion at level 10
Answer: Butterfree
Butterfree, Pokémon number 012 in the Kanto Pokedex, evolves at level 10 (from Metapod, who evolves from Caterpie at level 7). While most of Butterfree's abilities stem from grass/bug type attacks (like Stun Spore, Poisonpowder, and Sleep Powder), it can also learn psychic-type moves like Confusion and Psychic.
This is especially important in "Pokémon Yellow" as a well-leveled Butterfree can be a huge asset in the fight against the first gym leader, rock-type trainer Brock.
7. Kanto Pokedex #063
Answer: Abra
Abra's a sneaky devil. The Psi Pokémon, clocking it at #063 in the Kanto Pokedex, he has a tendency to be very speedy and timid, fleeing from battle using Teleport if encountered in the wild. Catching one can be a trial since, at the earliest instance, he'll try to leave you in the dust. Catching one, however, can be a real treat.
As he evolves his psychic powers can be second to none; he evolves into Kadabra and then, via trading, into Alakazam.
8. Can learn HM03
Answer: Lapras
Pokémon number 131 in the Kanto Pokedex, Lapras is a unique water-type Pokémon who has no evolutions. Received solely from a single trainer in Silph Co. in Saffron City, Lapras is impossible to obtain from regular battles, so you need to make sure to hunt her down while you can during your infiltration. Because Lapras is a large water Pokémon, teaching it HM03, Surf, is a good idea; it can be taught to most larger water Pokémon and has great importance when traveling around Kanto.
9. Found in the Safari Zone
Answer: Tauros
Tauros can only be caught in the Safari Zone north of Fuchsia City, so you need to be careful with your techniques therein to be able to nab one during your visit. That being said, Tauros is a fairly common Pokémon to find in the area. Number 128 in the Kanto Pokedex, Tauros is a normal-type Pokémon which, typically, travels in herds (though you'd never know it in-game). Along with Kangaskhan, it can only be caught in the one location.
10. Only capturable in "Pokémon Red"
Answer: Electabuzz
An electric Pokémon only capturable in the abandoned Power Plant in the northeast corner of Kanto, Electabuzz is unique in that he's one of the only Pokémon you can't catch in either "Pokémon Blue" or "Pokémon Yellow". Number 125 in the Kanto Pokedex, Electabuzz received a lesser evolution (Elekid) and a later evolution (Electivire) in later games in the series.
The Pokémon after him in the Pokedex, Magmar, is a fire-type who can only be found in the Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island in "Pokémon Blue".
