Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our protagonist has a somewhat unusual first name. What is it?

Answer: Guybrush

There's actually a minor character in the first game who points out that Guybrush's name is rather ridiculous, then he reveals that his own name is Mancomb!

As for Guybrush, his name came about from the name of a sprite file allegedly - file extension aside, the file was called "guybrush", with the "brush" part being a LucasArts naming convention at the time to indicate sprite files. The name stuck and here it still is, decades later.
2. Sitting around the campfire, the pirates accompanying our protagonist are rather fed up with his bragging. What is he bragging about?

Answer: Defeating the ghost pirate LeChuck

This story will eventually come back to haunt Guybrush (quite literally), as his happiness to tell everybody about this, and even produce proof (LeChuck's beard), which would eventually be taken and used by Largo to restore LeChuck.

From the venture, Guybrush also earns lots of treasure, but that doesn't last for very long, since Largo arrives and steals it from him almost instantly:

Guybrush: "HEEELP! Police!"
Largo: "HA! Scream all you want, there are no police on Scabb Island."
Guybrush: "Then who eats all the doughnuts and roughs up the transients? "
3. The Voodoo Lady has a plan to get rid of Largo and rid the island of his embargo. She needs you to gather four different ingredients to create it. What does she want to make?

Answer: A voodoo doll

The four ingredients required are something of the body, something of the head, something of the thread, and something of the dead. Guybrush acquires some spit, a wig, a pearly white bra and a bone from an ancestor respectively.

This process then gets mirrored again later in the game, as the game's conclusion also makes use of a voodoo doll where Guybrush must again acquire a set of these ingredients, however they need to relate to LeChuck this time. At that point of the game, the player is very familiar with the effects and ingredients of a voodoo doll.
4. What is the name of the treasure that our protagonist is seeking during the game?

Answer: Big Whoop

Guybrush ends up at Scabb Island as part of his search for Big Whoop, although he quickly finds out that it isn't there. Some of the clues for its location are, however, as he must seek out four map pieces and place them together to find its location. Guybrush finds out that the map was originally split between Captain Marley's crew and therefore must track them down in a variety of unlikely places.
5. On Phatt Island, our pirate protagonist suddenly finds himself on a wanted poster. What else happens to this wanted poster as the game progresses? (Tip: Read all the answers to this question before selecting one.)

Answer: Both of these

Guybrush's actions in this game are particularly notorious and the game has no issues with poking fun at this with the wanted poster which gleefully updates itself.

As well as the general kleptomaniac tendencies of any adventure game protagonist resulting in multiple charges of theft, Guybrush is also accused of witchcraft, murder, trespassing, graverobbing, larceny, gambling, using a false ID, disturbing the peace, premature entombment, tampering with plumbing, transporting animals without consent, vandalism, recklessness, impersonation, escaping prison, reanimation, holding library books that he doesn't own, drink mixing, releasing an alligator into a populated area. It also references him causing havoc by putting a rat in the vichyssoise, the event which inspired the title of this quiz.

By changing the picture to one of Captain Kate, Guybrush cheerfully frames her for his crimes so that he can move around undisturbed.
6. There is a Mardi Gras party at whose mansion on Booty Island?

Answer: Governor Elaine Marley

Governor Phatt's mansion is fittingly on Phatt Island. As the governor of Booty Island, it is Elaine who is holding the Mardi Gras party, but unfortunately she doesn't want to speak to Guybrush. Elaine is also the governor of Melee Island in the previous game - this game clarifies that in actuality she is the governor of the tri-island area (incorporating Melee Island, Booty Island and also Plunder Island). Booty Island is the only one of these three islands that appears in this game, though - Melee initially appears in "The Secret of Monkey Island", and Plunder Island in "The Curse of Monkey Island".
7. One of the game's more infamous puzzles is the puzzle where you need to turn a pump, but our protagonist needs assistance. The solution strongly relates to word play rather than logic. What is it?

Answer: Use Jojo the monkey to wrench the pump and shut off the waterfall

This puzzle was notoriously difficult to translate. In non-US English speaking countries, the term "monkey wrench" was not necessarily well known, with other names such as adjustable spanner being used. In languages other than English, likewise, there is no direct translation of "monkey wrench" that makes clear what the solution to the puzzle is intended to be. Since this pun didn't necessarily translate well, it could often be a sticking point for players, with it ending up being solved more by trial and error (or the infamous "use everything on everything when you're stuck" strategy) on a multitude of occasions.
8. Our protagonist becomes trapped at LeChuck's fortress with Wally, whose profession is very fitting given all of the map piece hunting that has to be done during the game. What is Wally's profession?

Answer: Cartographer

Poor Wally has a difficult time throughout the game. Before ending up hanging from chains in LeChuck's fortress, he loses his monocle - which Guybrush acquires so that Captain Dredd can take him away from Scabb Island. Guybrush can return with a replacement, though - a mini lighthouse lens. After all that, Wally remains with LeChuck (as seen in the sequel).
9. At LeChuck's fortress, our protagonist must navigate a maze of confusing passages. The doors are adorned with bones. What unusually rhythmic method does he use to find his way?

Answer: Uses the lyrics of the bone song he wrote down earlier

When he is knocked out earlier in the game, Guybrush has a strange sort of fever dream where he sees his parents who inform him that they need to impart some information, then they suddenly turn into skeletons and start singing a song, which is clearly based on the song "Dem Bones". He gets out the spit encrusted paper and starts to write it down. This particular version of the song is noticeably anatomically incorrect (eg. "the arm bone's connected to the head bone") but this is due to it being intended as a solution to this puzzle.

Although there's now a remaster with voice acting, this song is particularly striking to listen to in its original midi (MT-32) format as it encapulates the feeling of singing really well despite the game originally having no voice acting.
10. In the previous game, LeChuck was described simply as a ghost pirate, but in this game he appears in a different form. What is he this time?

Answer: A zombie

Perhaps inevitably since he was reanimated by Largo, LeChuck is now a zombie pirate instead, and he's not very impressed with how Guybrush took him down in the first game. He's out for revenge, and since Guybrush is still interfering with his plans, LeChuck doesn't even really need to look for him - he'll come along all by himself.
