Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The anthem has two verses, but usually the first verse is sung. The song won a referendum in 1977, beating out "Waltzing Matilda", "The Song of Australia" and the existing national anthem, "God Save the Queen", and officially became the anthem in 1984.
It was written by Peter Dodds McCormick, in 1878, and originally had four verses. Several small changes to the lyrics have been made - the first two lines used to read -
"Australians 'sons' let us rejoice,
For we are 'young' and free".
