Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which church would you find Michaelangelo's statue of Moses, whom he depicted with horns. The statue bears a notable resemblance to Charlton Heston, and it was after seeing it that Cecil B. DeMille cast Heston as Moses in "The Ten Commandments."

Answer: San Pietro in Vincoli (St Peter in Chains)

Its name derives from its prized relic, the chains worn by St Peter in prison, which are on display in front of the altar.
2. This small church, near Santa Maria Maggiore (St Mary Major), has a 9th century mosaic depicting a female bishop, and the pillar Jesus was tied to while receiving the 39 lashes.

Answer: Santa Prassede (St Prassede)

The mosaic is clearly labelled "Theodora Episcopa" (Bishop Theodora), and she is shown with a square halo, which denotes a living person of great sanctity.
3. This church is really three. The ground level dates from the 12th century, but below it is the remains of a 4th century church, and a full level below that is a Temple of Mithras, dating back to Classical times.

Answer: San Clemente (St Clement's)

Each level can be visited. The Temple of Mithras is built over a quickly flowing stream, and is a maze of small hallways.
4. This church contains the Pope's seat as the Bishop of Rome.

Answer: San Giovanni in Laterno (St John Lateran)

It was the former Papal Palace, and still is the only cathedral in Rome.
5. This imposing Jesuit church has some spectacular visual effects on its ceiling, painted by Pozzo, including what appears to be a dome's interior, but is really a flat, circular, perspective painting.

Answer: San Ignazio de Loyola (St Ignatius Loyola)

The painting on the nave's ceiling has a three-dimensional quality, as characters and parts of buildings seem to move as one walks.
6. This church was built on (or very close to) the sites of former "circuses" or stadiums erected by Nero and Caligula.

Answer: Basilica San Pietro (St Peter's - The Vatican)

It was believed the St Peter was buried in a cemetery in this location, and a number of churches were erected on the spot before the present structure.
7. This beautiful little church, designed by Bernini, is oblong in shape, and has, above the altar, a painting of its namesake saint, in which he appears to be looking at a statue of himself ascending to the top of the church.

Answer: San Andrea al Quirinale (St Andrew on the Quirinal)

Bernini had an awkward piece of land to work with, and decided on the oblong shape to make the most of it.
8. This circular church is decorated with frescoes depicting the grisly deaths of numerous martyrs.

Answer: Santo Stefano Rotondo (St Stephen Rotondo)

One of the few circular churches still in existence in Europe.
9. This church is believed to be located on the site of a brothel, and stands on one side of the beautiful Piazza Navona.

Answer: Sant'Agnese in Agone

A young St Agnes was taken to the brothel and stripped naked in an effort to make her renounce Christianity (though exactly how it would have that effect escapes me).
10. This is the Rome's only church built in French Gothic style, but decorated in full-out Italian colour, and has, in front of it, a marble statue of an elephant with an obelisk on its back.

Answer: Santa Maria Sopra Minerva ( St Mary Over Minerva)

The statue is by Bernini, and if it has any religious significance its beyond me. The church was built on the site of a Roman temple to Minerva, currently being excavated, and is just behind the Pantheon.
