Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The colorful magnetic letters used to spell this Vice-President's name are all mixed up. They now spell "MILK WAILING," which makes absolutely no sense. I know he ran as a Democrat from New Hampshire and served as Vice-President for Franklin Pierce for only 45 days in 1853. Who was he?

Answer: William King

William Rufus DeVane King, the 13th Vice-President, was elected on the Democratic ticket with Franklin Pierce. He only served from March 4, 1853 to April 18, 1853. Since he was terminally ill with tuberculosis, a Special Act of Congress allowed him to take the oath of office in Cuba, where he had gone to rest.

Although he was out of the country and took the oath 20 days after the inauguration, he was still considered to be a serving Vice-President for those previous 3 weeks. He died shortly after returning to his plantation in Alabama.
2. He served as Vice-President for both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, but was in no way related to the 42nd U.S. President. The letters of his name now spell "GOING ELECTRON." Who was he?

Answer: George Clinton

George Clinton was the first elected Governor of New York state and the 4th Vice-President of the United States. He was the first Vice-President to serve under two different Presidents, and the first Vice-President to die while in office. He named his son and daughter George and Martha, after President and Mrs. Washington.
3. This next Vice-President's name is now spelling "THE ONLY JR" on my refrigerator door, but I remember he became President in 1841 after only one month as Vice-President. What was his name?

Answer: John Tyler

John Tyler was the 10th Vice-President of the United States, serving with President William Harrison. When President Harrison died exactly one month after his inauguration, John Tyler became the 10th President of the United States. Being the first Vice-President to succeed a deceased President, he was nicknamed "His Accidency" for becoming President without being elected.
4. This is just extremely confusing! This Vice-President was a Republican and was Vice-President for only six months before the assassination of President James Garfield. The letters of his name are currently spelling the words 'RESEARCH TRUTH' on the refrigerator door. Who was he?

Answer: Chester Arthur

Some of his political rivals insinuated he was really born north of the Canadian border, but Chester A. Arthur was born in Fairfield, in northern Vermont. Had he been born in Canada, as a British subject, he would not have been eligible to become Vice-President or President.

He was the 20th Vice-President of the United States and became the 21st President upon President Garfield's assassination in 1881. President Arthur did not have a Vice-President while in office.
5. Vice-President from 1993 to 2001, this man was born in Washington D.C. and was a Senator from Tennessee. He almost became President in the 2000 elections but lost to George W. Bush. This Vice-President's name spells "LARGE OR BET" on the freezer door. Who was he?

Answer: Albert Gore

Albert "Al" Gore was the 45th Vice-President of the United States. While attending Harvard, he was roommate with (future actor) Tommy Lee Jones. Although he had the popular vote in the 2000 Presidential Election, George W. Bush won the electoral votes and became the 43rd President. Former Vice-President Gore has since dedicated himself to environmental issues.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
6. Vice-President for James Earl Carter, Jr., he ran against Ronald Reagan in the 1984 Presidential Election, but he obviously did not win. His mixed up name amounts to the phrase "RAT MADE ON WELL." What was his name?

He ran again for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 1984 election where, determined to establish a precedent, he choose Geraldine A. Ferraro of New York as his running mate; the first woman ever nominated for that position by a major party.
7. I'm very glad there were only ten Vice-Presidents whose names were disrupted when I slammed the refrigerator door. With the letters of his name now spelling "CLASSIC HURTER," who was Vice-President for President Herbert Hoover from 1929 to 1933?

Answer: Charles Curtis

Charles Curtis, the 31st U.S. Vice-President, was the first Vice-President to actually take his oath of office with his hand on a Bible. He was the first man with Native American ancestors to reach such a high government office. Curtis had Native American ancestors on his mother's side, including Kaw, Osage and Pottawatomie.

His early childhood was spent living with his maternal grandparents on their Kaw reservation. He later lived with his paternal grandparents to attend high school in Topeka, Kansas, and was admitted to the bar in 1881.

Answer: Garret Hobart

Garret Augustus Hobart was the 24th Vice President of the United States. Nominated as Vice President on the Republican ticket with William McKinley, he was elected in the 1896 Presidential Election. He died of heart failure on November 21, 1899 at the age of 55. While Vice-President, Hobart became one of President McKinley's best friends, confidant, and advisers; and because he worked so closely with President McKinley, he was often referred to as the "Assistant to the President."
9. He was Vice-President from 1817 to 1825, serving two terms with President James Monroe. He died 99 days after his second term ended. His name inexplicably rearranged itself to read "A KIND SIMPLETON." What was his name?

Daniel D. Tompkins was governor of the state of New York from 1807-1817. As Governor, one of his aides was Washington Irving (author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"). Tompkins became the 6th U.S. Vice-President. While he served his term, five states were admitted to the Union: Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Missouri, and Maine.
10. Only one Vice-President's name remains in disorder. My colorful magnetic letters turned his name into "VOMIT LONER". Not very flattering, but that's what it spells just the same. He was a New York businessman who served under President Harrison and after leaving the White House, he was Governor of New York from 1895 to 1897. Who was he?

Answer: Levi Morton

As the U.S. Minister to France, Levi Parsons Morton hammered the first rivet in the first piece of the Statue of Liberty in 1881. In Paris on July 4, 1884, Morton accepted the statue on behalf of the U.S. Government; and he was the first American to climb the Statue of Liberty. This 22nd Vice-President of the U.S.A. ran for the Republican nomination for President in 1896 but lost to William McKinley.
