Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which US president, who spent four days camping in Yosemite with naturalist Thomas Muir in 1903, set aside 800,000 acres in the Grand Canyon for a national monument, later declared a national park?

Answer: Teddy Roosevelt

Teddy Roosevelt is often remembered for his participation in the Rough Riders, for his Square Deal programme breaking up trusts and regulating railroads, and for his efforts to end the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won a Nobel Prize. What many do not know is that he was an avid naturalist. During his camping trip with John Muir, they discussed what was needed to protect US wilderness areas.

In addition to setting aside land for a Grand Canyon National Monument, his administration created many other national parks and monuments, among them Crater Lake, Mesa Verde, the Devil's Tower, Pinnacles, and Chaco Canyon.

3. The Brandenburg Gate was built to be a symbol of peace, but what Prussian symbol of war was later added to it?

Answer: Iron Cross

When the twelve-column neoclassical Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was completed in 1791, on top of it sat a quadriga (four-horse chariot) driven by the Goddess of Peace, holding a lance adorned with a wreath of oak leaves. After Napoleon defeated Prussia at the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt, the little Corsican stole the quadriga away to Paris. Following Napoleon's defeat in 1814, the Prussians retrieved the quadriga, whereupon they added to the wreath the Prussian eagle and the Iron Cross, a military decoration established by King Frederick William III of Prussia.

The Goddess of Peace became the Goddess of Victory.

Answer: Stained glass

The royal chapel of Sainte-Chapelle used to be the seat of the Kings of France up until the 14th century, but, nowadays, it is one of the national monuments of France. Located on the Île de la Cité in Paris, France, a leisurely walk away from the famous Notre Dame cathedral, it is an excellent example of Gothic architecture.

In the chapel, one can see the breathtaking stained glass windows of Sainte-Chapelle. Using only five colours of glass, the windows show 1,113 biblical figures in 15 windows. These windows were commissioned by King Louis IX in 1242 and have been protected, reinforced, and restored several times throughout history.
