Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The word "safari" means "to travel" in which African language?

Answer: Swahili

The word originated from the Arabic "safara" which means to travel. It was then used in East Africa and was adapted to "safari" in Swahili. The word entered the English language late in the 19th century. Yoruba is a language of West Africa, Farsi is Persian, and Aramaic was a Semitic language.

2. What event in history led president Franklin D. Roosevelt to declare it a "date which will live in infamy"?

Answer: The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor

The Japanese knew that they were eventually going to have to take on the American navy if they wanted to continue their expansion, and hoped to cripple it right before they started their major expansion into South East Asia. They still wanted to give a formal declaration of war, but also wanted the element of surprise.

They tried to time the delivery of the declaration to be just before the attack, but complications prevented the Japanese ambassador from delivering it in time. With no prior knowledge of an impending act of war, Roosevelt declared December 7, 1941 a day that would live in infamy.

3. Since 1970, the Bank of England has featured various individuals that helped shape Britain on its bank notes. Which former U.K. prime minister and Nobel Prize winner was featured on the polymer £5 note issued in September 2016?

Answer: Winston Churchill

The portrait of Winston Churchill was on the back of the five pound note which was the first polymer note to be issued in the UK. The note had new security features to make counterfeiting even harder. The other three options also featured on UK bank notes at various times.

4. When a Navy ship is put in "mothballs," what has happened to it?

Answer: It has been retired from active service

When a warship has been rendered obsolete by new technology, or is simply no longer needed by the Navy, it is often taken out of service and sent to the "mothball fleet." In an emergency, these vessels can be overhauled and placed back in service more quickly and at less expense than would be involved in building new ships.

This happened during the Vietnam War, for example, when a WWII-era battleship was taken out of mothballs and used for shore bombardment. Most ships that are mothballed end up being scrapped or used as targets in training exercises; some are sunk to create artificial reefs to benefit marine life, and a few are turned into museum ships.

5. Yeoman Warders (nicknamed 'beefeaters') are the ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. Which of the following is NOT a requirement for candidates hoping to become a Yeoman Warder?

Answer: Experience as a tour guide

The Yeoman Warders were formed by the first Tudor monarch, Henry VII, in 1485. Present day Yeoman Warders are all retired members of the British armed forces (army, navy, air force, or marines) who fulfil the stringent requirements for recruitment. The garrison is composed of a Chief Warder and 32 Yeoman Warders who are formally responsible for guarding the crown jewels and any prisoners (though no prisoners have been held in the Tower since 1952). Since the Victorian era they have also conducted guided tours of the Tower.

6. The Davis Divan three-wheeled car was created by a used car salesman who later developed which item often seen at fun fairs?

Answer: Bumper cars

This three-wheeled convertible was created by Gary Davis during the 1940s. He based his design on a similar vehicle already in use. Oh dear, dirty work at the crossroads by the sound of it. After raising more than a million dollars to manufacture the vehicle, David failed to deliver cars to the dealers, or pay his employees for much of their work, resulting in two law suits over same.

The company promptly went into liquidation and Davis was sent to the clanger for two years - hard labour at that.

It's a shame all that happened because this vehicle is really rather lovely looking. After his release, Davis dabbled in various other schemes, finally achieving a degree of success with his creation of the bumper cars which are often seen at various fun fairs and amusement parks.

In 1911, he was a co-founder of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in Detroit. The famous company logo, the "bowtie", is said to be a modified Swiss cross as a tribute to Chevrolet's homeland.
