Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sega Corporation is a video game company and arcade game manufacturer. Where does the name come from?

Answer: Service Games of Japan

In 1940, Standard Games, based in Honolulu began selling coin-operated games. In 1951 the company moved to Japan and was renamed Service Games. In 1965 Service Games merged with rival arcade machine provider Rosen Enterprises. The new name of the post-merger company was Sega Enterprises, from combining the first two letters of SErvice with the first two of GAmes.
2. The Swedish company IKEA is the largest furniture retailer in the world. "IKEA" is an acronym for four words that mean what?

Answer: The name of the founder and where he grew up

IKEA was named for founder Ingvar Kamprad (b. 1926), the farm where he grew up, Elmtaryd, and his home parish of Agunnaryd. Kamprad founded the company in 1943 when he was only 17 years old.
3. How did the video game company Nintendo get its name?

Answer: Japanese words that translate as "entrusted heaven"

Nintendo Koppai was founded in 1889, and originally produced hanafuda cards. These are cards that use images instead of numbers, in an attempt to reduce their ability to be used in gambling. Nintendo still produces the cards, although the card business is dwarfed by their video game endeavors.
4. Sharp Corporation is an electronics company named after one of the company's first products. What product was Sharp named after?

Answer: an "ever-sharp" pencil

Founder Tokuji Hayakawa (1894-1981) invented the "Ever-Sharp" mechanical pencil in 1915. After a 1923 earthquake destroyed the mechanical pencil factory, the company relocated and started manufacturing consumer electronics.
5. Online auction and "buy it now" site eBay first operated under a different name as part of the founder's personal site. When it was time for the auction site to get its own url, the original name was not available so eBay.com was used. What was eBay's original name?

Answer: Echo Bay Technology

Echo Bay Technology Group was founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar (b. 1967). Echobay.com was already taken by a mining company, Echo Bay Mines, that became a subsidiary of Kinross Gold Corporation in 2003. In 2007, the private investment company Echobay Partners began using the echobay.com url.
6. Why did Tote'm convenience stores change their name to 7-Eleven in 1946?

Answer: new hours of 7am to 11pm

In 1927, Joe C. Thompson, an employee of Southland Ice Company in Dallas, Texas, began selling milk and eggs after local grocery stores were closed, which proved to be very profitable. Some Tote'm stores (because customers "toted" away their purchases) did use totem poles as exterior store decorations.
7-Eleven started piloting 24-hour stores in 1962, starting in Austin, Texas.
7. What type of animal gives its name to the Reebok athletic company?

Answer: antelope

In 1960, the J.W. Foster and Sons shoe company was renamed after a type of African antelope by two of the founder's grandsons. They used a South African edition dictionary that their grandfather had won in a race, which is why the Afrikaans spelling of reebok instead of rhebok was used.
8. Approximately 20 billion plastic Lego bricks are produced every year, but how did the Lego Group get its name?

Answer: Danish words that translate as "play well"

In 1934, Ole Kirk Christiansen (1891-1958) held a contest for his employees to name his company, but chose one of his own ideas, Lego, which blended the words "leg godt," or "play well." The modern design for Lego bricks was established in 1958, and the bricks from 1958 are compatible with the bricks made today.
9. The flagship beverage of PepsiCo is Pepsi-Cola, but why was the drink named "Pepsi"?

Answer: the digestive enzyme pepsin

Invented in 1898 as "Brad's Drink" by Caleb Bradham (1867-1934) in his New Bern NC home, the name was changed in 1903. Bradham advertised his drink as "Exhilarating, Invigorating, Aids Digestion," which may explain why he named it after a digestive enzyme (not used as an ingredient) and the kola nuts used to make the drink.
10. Taco Bell is an American fast-food chain that sells "Americanized" versions of Mexican food. The "taco" part is obvious, but why is there a "bell" in the name?

Answer: the founder's name

Taco Bell was founded by Glen Bell (1923-2010) in 1962. He sold the chain to PepsiCo in 1978.
