Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "E" class of British ships was designed in 1918 to counter a rumored class of very fast German cruisers, but they were not completed until 1926. How many of them were built?

Answer: Two

Completed in 1926, the "E" class ships "Emerald" and "Enterprise", while based on the preceding "C" and "D" classes, were much larger and faster, mounting seven 6-inch and three 4-inch guns on a 9400 ton displacement. They were the fastest ships in the British fleet on the outbreak of World War II and saw action in every theater.

A third ship, "Euphrates", was cancelled. Both ships were scrapped in 1948.
2. The "Nagara" class of six ships were Japan's first light cruisers commissioned after the Washington Treaty, and all six ships served in World War II. How many units survived the war?

Answer: None

Built between 1920-1924, the six "Nagara" class cruisers were armed with seven 5.5-inch guns and displaced 5700 tons. The "Nagaras" served in every major campaign and were all sunk by the end of the war.
3. While not a party to the Washington Treaty, this first major warship built by Germany after World War I was within treaty limits. What was the name of this ship?

Answer: Emden

The "Emden", built 1921-1925, carried eight 5.9-inch guns on a displacement of 7000 tons. She participated in the invasion of Norway in 1940 and was also used as a minelayer and training ship. "Emden" was bombed at Kiel in 1945 and the wreck was broken up in 1949.
4. The first French light cruisers built after the Washington Treaty were the three ships of the "Duguay-Trouin" class. What was their main armament?

Answer: Eight 6.1-inch guns

The three "Duguay-Trouin" class ships were armed with eight 6.1-inch guns and displaced 9500 tons. "Duguay-Trouin" fought with the Free French Navy and was scrapped in 1952. "Lamotte-Picquet" was sunk by air attack in Saigon Harbor in 1942. "Primauget" was sunk during the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942.
5. The Japanese planned to build eight units of the "Sendai" class, but decided after the signing of the Washington Treaty to concentrate on building heavy cruisers instead. How many of the "Sendai" class were completed?

Answer: Three

The three units of the "Sendai" class were an updated version of the previous "Nagara" class and carried the same armament of seven 5.5-inch guns on a displacement of 5700 tons. All three ships were sunk in combat in World War II, while five other units were cancelled.
6. This Japanese ship was an experimental design, integrating the armor into the hull to save weight and allow for greater speed on a smaller hull. Can you name the ship?

Answer: Yubari

The "Yubari" carried six 5.5-inch guns on a displacement of 3560 tons. The design modifications were on the whole successful, but the ship's small size meant that she was mostly used as a training ship or a leader for destroyer flotillas. "Yubari" was sunk by a U.S. submarine in 1944.
7. This three ship class of German cruisers were a more modern design than the "Emden", which was basically a World War I type. Can you name the class?

Answer: Konigsberg class

The three ships of the class were the "Konigsberg", "Karlsruhe", and "Koln". They were built between 1926-1930 and carried nine 5.9-inch guns on a displacement of 7700 tons. Both the "Konigsberg" and "Karlsruhe" were sunk during the invasion of Norway, while the "Koln" was sunk by air attack in Wilhelmshaven in 1945.
8. The Netherlands built two small light cruisers to protect their possessions in the East Indies from the Japanese, the "Java" and "Sumatra". What was their main armament?

Answer: Ten 5.9-inch guns

The "Java" and "Sumatra" displaced 8300 tons and carried ten 5.9 inch guns. Built between 1916-1926, both units served in the Pacific in World War II and were both sunk by the Japanese. A third unit, "Celebes", was cancelled.
9. Spain built the "Blas de Lezo" class of two ships between 1915-1925. Which other European naval power assisted the Spanish in the design of these ships?

Answer: Great Britain

The "Blas de Lezo" and "Mendez Nunez" were built in Spain with British assistance and resembled the British "C" class cruisers. Armament was six 6-inch guns on a displacement of 6350 tons. "Blas de Lezo" was wrecked in 1932. "Mendez Nunez" fought for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and was reconstructed as an antiaircraft cruiser in 1944. She was scrapped in 1963.
10. Spain completed a second class of light cruisers, the "Almirante Cervera" class, between 1927-1930. All three units fought in and survived the Civil War. In what year was the last ship decommissioned?

Answer: 1970

The "Almirante Cervera", "Miguel de Cervantes", and "Principe Alfonso" were armed with eight 6-inch and four 4-inch guns on a displacement of 9400 tons. In the Spanish Civil War, the "Cervantes" fought on the Nationalist side, while the "Cervera" and "Alfonso" served in the Republican navy. The "Alfonso" was the last unit serving, being broken up in 1970.
