Answer: sugar beets

Alberta is Canada's only province that produces sugar from sugar beets. 35,000 acres of sugar beets are grown and harvested each fall which are then sent to Taber, Alberta. Here the sugar beets are processed in the only plant of its kind in Canada into granulated and powdered sugar as well as liquid sucrose and liquid invert sugar.
