Guam is an island in the Pacific Ocean located in the region known as Micronesia. Guam was first claimed and colonised by Spain in the 16th century. During the Spanish-American War, Guam was captured by US forces and in the Treaty of Paris in 1898, which ended the Spanish-American war, Guam was given to the USA.

In 1941 during World War II, Guam was captured by Japanese forces and was held by them until US forces liberated the island in July 1944. In modern times Guam's economy is largely based on tourism and the large US military presence on the island for whom it is an important strategic location in the Pacific.

Tokelau is a territory of New Zealand made up of the coral atolls of Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofa. The islands are very small with a total land area for all three atolls of 3.9 sq mi. The name Tokelau means "north wind" in the native language of the islands. Like a number of flags of Pacific nations and territories the flag of Tokelau features a representation of the Southern Cross constellation.

The current flag of Puerto Rico was adopted in 1952 and is based on a flag from 1895 used during a revolt against Spanish rule.
