Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The West Midlands Metro is a tram network connecting towns and cities in the West Midlands region of England. The first part of the network opened in 1999 and connected the city of Wolverhampton to the city of Birmingham with the trams terminating at Snow Hill Station on the edge of Birmingham city centre. Large portions of this section of the line made use of a disused railway line.
An extension was opened in 2015 which took the network into Birmingham city centre and connected it to the main railway station in the city, Birmingham New Street. The stop for this station is called Grand Central - the same name as the retail and leisure complex which is located above the rail station. In 2022 the line was extended again with trams running to Edgbaston Village stop, located in the Edgbaston suburb of Birmingham.
The next extension sees the network reach the town of Dudley and connects into the Brierly Hill area as well as calling at the Merry Hill shopping complex.
When the network originally opened the rolling stock was the T-69 built by the Italian company AnsaldoBredo with 16 units operating on the line. In 2014-15 a new fleet of trams was introduced with the line operated by Urbos 3s built by the Spanish company CAF. As well as being used in the West Midlands these trams are also used in Spain and Luxembourg.
