Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where were the Great Pyramids located?

Answer: Giza

The Pyramids are currently the only wonders that haven't been destroyed. The Pyramids were supposedly built for Pharoah Khufu and his family.
2. How were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon thought to be watered?

Answer: A machine carried water to the top and it irrigated the plants

Although there may have been different ways to how it was watered, experts believe this is the most likely idea as it was the most efficient.
3. Who was the ruler of Babylon while the Gardens were built?

Answer: Nebuchadnezzar

It is said that Nebuchadnezzar II built these gardens for his wife because she missed her homeland up in the mountains. He never had a son named Herodotus; he was a Greek historian.
4. What happened to the Statue of Zeus?

Answer: It was destroyed in a fire

Before Olympia was assaulted with natural disasters, the statue was moved to Constantinople and was destroyed by a fire in A.D. 462.
5. How long did the statue of Zeus take to build?

Answer: 10 years

The statue was built by Phidias. Phidias was born in 490 B.C. He started building the statue when he was 60 and finished it ten years later.
6. On the night of July 21 356 B.C. a man named Herostratus burned The Temple of Artemis to the ground. On the same night something very important in history occurred. What happened?

Answer: Alexander the Great was born

He was born at almost exactly the same time.
7. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus may have been destroyed, but it stood an exceptionally long time before it was. How long had it stood?

Answer: 1724 years

By 1404, most of the Mausoleum had been ruined by a series of earthquakes, so the crusaders who occupied the city started to recycle the stone used in the Mausoleum.
8. The Colossus of Rhodes was built in 304 B.C. and took twelve years to build. The Colossus required many resources. Where did the Rhodians get the resources to build this?

Answer: They recycled metal from siege machines used in a previous battle

The Rhodians were at war with a man named Demitrius. He was unable to breach the wall that protected Rhodes even with his weapons and was forced to flee, leaving his siege weapons behind.
9. What was the Colossus of Rhodes plated with?

Answer: bronze

The Rhodians used the bronze they salvaged from the siege weapons. Using that much gold would have been too expensive and no one knew how to make steel yet.
10. How tall was the Pharos of Alexandria?

Answer: 600 feet

It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1303.
