Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia: who was the sculptor?

Answer: Phidias

Phidias or Pheidias also did the statue of Athena in the Parthenon at Athens. This statue was made for a new temple (completed 456 BC) that was built due to the popularity of the Olympic Games.
2. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia: The statue is gold and ivory on a wooden core. What is the term for this type of statue?

Answer: chryselephantine

Chrys is the root for gold. Elephantine is the root for ivory (for obvious reasons). In his right hand was the goddess Nike (Victory). His left hand held a scepter as king of the gods.
3. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus: Some of the remains of this building still exist. Where?

Answer: British Museum

This tomb was built after King Mausolus died in 353BC. In honor of this wonder, English now has the word "mausoleum".
4. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus: We all know that this was built for King Mausolus. Who was his queen (and sister) who ordered it built?

Answer: Artemisia

Queen Artemisia also had to deal with a Rhodesian rebellion after her husband (brother) died. Her solution was brilliant. She captured the Rhodesian ships, put her own army on them, and sailed them back to Rhodes. The Rhodesians were fooled and welcomed the fleet with open arms. She never saw the Mausoleum completed - she died a year before it was done.
5. The Great Pharos at Alexandria: What was the Pharos named after?

Answer: The island it was placed on

The Pharos was designed by Sostrates who wanted his name on it. Ptolemy II refused this request and demanded that HIS name be the only one on it. Sostrates carved his own name on it, covered it with plaster, and carved Ptolemy II's name on the plaster. Eventually the plaster wore away to reveal Sostrates' name.
6. The Great Pharos at Alexandria: how many years did it take to complete?

Answer: 20

The Pharos was also a tourist attraction. Food was sold and there were observation decks so people could enjoy the view of the Mediterranean Sea.
7. The Temple of Artemis: How many temples were built total at Ephesus?

Answer: 4 or more

The temple kept being destroyed and rebuilt. The most famous ones were designed by Chersiphron (circa 600 BC), Theodorus (circa 550 BC), Scopas of Paros (circa 355 BC). Today, pieces of the temple can be seen at the British Museum.
8. The Temple of Artemis: Who demanded to have his name carved into the temple, but was placated by the Ephesians saying "It is not fitting that one god should build a temple for another god"

Answer: Alexander

Alexander was going through Ephesus as the temple was being rebuilt. He offered to pay for it if his name was placed as the builder. The Ephesians (diplomatically) refused. When the last temple was destroyed by St John Chrysostomin AD 401, Ephesus was in a decline and it was not rebuilt. Today the temple site is a marsh.
9. The Colossus of Rhodes: Who was the god represented by the Colossus?

Answer: Helios

This statue represented the god of the sun. It was made of bronze and faced the east. Contrary to popular belief, it did not straddle the harbor.
10. The Colossus of Rhodes: By far, the shortest lived of the Wonders. How many years did it last before collapsing?

Answer: 56

It was finished in 282 BC and fell in an earthquake in 226 BC. The Rhodesians did not rebuild it for fear it had offended the god Helios. It was eventually taken for scrap when the Arabs conquered Rhodes in the 7th Century CE.
11. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon: what does the "Hanging" part refer to?

Answer: Overhanging terraces

The garden was called "kremastos" by the Greeks. This adjective does not refer to being suspended but rather a part of a building that overhangs like a balcony.
12. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon: Nebuchadnezzar built the gardens for his homesick wife, who was from Media. What was her name?

Answer: Amyitis

There is a valid question as to whether this Wonder really existed. Herodotus never mentions it and some of the early historians that made lists of great wonders listed the Great Walls of Babylon as a wonder and not the gardens. There is no mention of the gardens in Babylonian records either.
13. The Great Pyramid of Giza: Approximately how many stones were used to build this Wonder?

Answer: 2,300,000

This Wonder was the first built. It is also the only one still standing and was by far the largest. In fact, it was the tallest building in the world until the completion of the central spire of Lincoln Cathedral in 1311.
14. The Great Pyramid of Giza: What Pharaoh had this wonder built?

Answer: Khufu

But was it his tomb? His body was not in it and there is no indication that ANY burial was there. This has led some to conjecture that it was used as an astronomical observatory.
15. General: The Great Pyramid is the only Wonder left standing. What was the last of the other Wonders to be destroyed?

Answer: The Great Pharos at Alexandria

The Pharos was damaged by earthquakes in AD 365 and AD 1303. The final collapse came in AD 1326. The base of the Mausoleum was still visible in 1404, but most of it had collapsed long before this.
