It is a common mistake to relate Indira Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi; there was no relationship. After studies in England, Indira returned to India in 1941 and become active in the Indian Independence Movement. As a member of the Congress Party she become Prime Minister for the first time in 1966.

After losing the 1977 election, she was again elected Prime Minister in 1980 and served until she was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on 31st October 1984.
