Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Liaquat Ali Khan was the first prime minister of the newly independent country of Pakistan in 1947. He held the position for a little over four years before he was assassinated.

Ibrahim Ismail Chundrigar and Feroze Khan Noon served short terms in the 1950s and were both ousted prematurely, the former through a vote of no-confidence only 55 days into his term and the latter when martial law was imposed.

From December 1958 to December 1971, the position of prime minister remained vacant as General Ayub Khan imposed martial law. His successor General Yahya Khan appointed Nurul Amin as prime minister but Amin only lasted in this role for thirteen days. General Zulfikar Ali Bhutto assumed the post of president and the prime minister's seat again was left vacant for almost two years till the Constitution was re-promulgated. Bhutto then resigned as president and took over as prime minister.

In 1977, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was deposed as the army once again took over and imposed martial law. Martial law lasted till 1985 when Muhammad Khan Junejo was appointed prime minister and served for over three years.

In 1988, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's daughter, Benazir Bhutto, was appointed prime minister making her not only Pakistan's first female prime minister but also the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state. She served two non-consecutive terms but in both cases, her government was dissolved prematurely by the president of the time.

After Benazir's first time, Nawaz Sharif took over as prime minister. Until 2024, he was Pakistan's longest serving prime minister holding the post for almost nine years across three non-consecutive terms. In each term, however, his government was dismissed with the last one being for his involvement in the global Panama Papers corruption scandal.

Shaukat Aziz was prime minister from 2004-2007 and was the country's first prime minister to leave after completing his whole term, not a small achievement given the fate made by all his predecessors.

Imran Khan was famous for having lead the team to win the Cricket World Cup for Pakistan in 1992. When he formed a political party, he rode this wave of popularity along with the public disenchantment with the existing leadership. In 2018, he was elected prime minister and served till 2022 when he was ousted through a vote of no-confidence.

Incorrect answers:
Muhammad Ali Jinnah is considered the founder of Pakistan. He also held the position of the independent country's first governor-general.

Mohammad Iqbal is honoured as Pakistan's national poet though he died before he could see the country attain independence.

Pervez Musharraf was an army general who staged a coup in 1999. He then held the position of president for most of the 2000s.

Sheikh Hasina was the prime minister of neighbouring Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) while Manmohan Singh was the prime minister of India.
