Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the 1990s, the Canadian Football League expanded briefly into the United States. Which of these US cities did NOT host a team during this expansion?

Answer: Albuquerque

Between 1993 and 1995, the CFL had six teams south of the border--the Baltimore Stallions, Birmingham Barracudas, Las Vegas Posse, Memphis Mad Dogs, Sacramento Gold Miners (later the San Antonio Texans), and Shreveport Pirates. The Stallions distinguished themselves by drawing huge crowds and winning the Grey Cup in 1995.

In fact, when the US experiment ended after the 1995 season, the Stallions moved to Montreal and became a new incarnation of the Montreal Alouettes. (Thanks to the website http://members.tripod.com/cfldimension/honoured.html for information on the CFL's US-based teams.)
2. In which US city would you find One Williams Center [1976, 667 feet (203 meters)]?

Answer: Tulsa

The tallest building in the state of Oklahoma, the 52-story One Williams Center is home to the Williams Companies, known for their work in natural gas pipelines and production. The architectural firm of Minoru Yamasaki & Associates, the same firm that designed the World Trade Center in New York City, designed this International Style structure. (Thanks to skyscrapers.com and to williams.com for additional information.)
3. In Lois McMaster Bujold's novel, "Cetaganda", why are Miles Vorkosigan and his cousin, Ivan Vorpatril, sent to visit the Cetagandan Empire?

Answer: A state funeral

What starts out as a simple diplomatic mission for Miles and Ivan, acting as the bearers of Barrayar's official gift of mourning for Cetaganda's fallen empress, becomes a story of intrigue and mystery for the hero. Miles ultimately has to prove that his planet isn't involved in an expansive plot to disrupt Cetagandan genetics.
4. When did DuPont begin commercial production of the durable, lightweight material called TyvekŪ?

Answer: 1967

Created with flash spun polyethylene fibers, TyvekŪ is used for a variety of applications, including envelopes, protective clothing, medical packaging and advertising materials. The material was accidentally discovered in 1955 by a DuPont researcher, and it took the company over a decade to get it to market. (Thanks to www.tyvek.com for more information on TyvekŪ.)
5. Which of the following military aircraft is NOT considered to be a member of the Century Series?

Answer: Lockheed F-94 Starfire

The Century Series of fighter aircraft is so named because their designation number is 100 or greater--a distinction shared here by all the aircraft except the F-94 Starfire. A more advanced, two-man version of the F-80 Shooting Star, the Starfire was an all-weather fighter/interceptor.

The first member of the Century Series, North American's F-100 Super Sabre, holds the distinction of being the first American jet fighter to achieve supersonic speeds in level flight.
6. In the videogame "Midnight Club II", which of the following US cities are you able to race in?

Answer: Los Angeles

The sequel to the popular "Midnight Club", which allowed gamers to race in London and New York, "Midnight Club II" puts the action in Los Angeles, Paris and Tokyo. The other cities listed here are also prominent in some popular driving games. Miami, for example, can be driven in the crime game "Driver"; Chicago can be tackled in the racing game "Midtown Madness" and the crime game "Driver 2"; and San Francisco can be found in "Midtown Madness 2" and the "San Francisco Rush" series, as well as the 1980s-vintage PC game "Vette!", among others.
7. In what year did Michigan's legislature complete the abolition of the death penalty in that state?

Answer: 1847

In 1828, eight years before Michigan achieved statehood, Patrick Fitzpatrick, a Detroit native living in what is now Windsor, Ontario, was hung by Canadian authorities for raping and murdering the daughter of a local innkeeper. The evidence against Fitzpatrick was circumstantial, but the authorities were convinced they had the right man.

It wasn't until seven years afterward that Fitzpatrick's roommate, on his deathbed, confessed to the crime. Outraged Michiganders were committed to preventing wrongful executions in the future and on March 1, 1847, Michigan constitutionally abolished the death penalty.

It became the first English-speaking territory to do so, and has retained its abolitionist stance, even as many there have clamored to have the death penalty brought back. (Thanks to the Citizens United for Alternatives to the Death Penalty website for additional information.)
8. In which South Carolina city can the weary traveler find The Peachoid?

Answer: Gaffney

A novel idea to help Gaffney deal with its water problems AND trumpet South Carolina's status as a peach-growing mecca, The Peachoid can hold one million gallons of water. Chicago Bridge & Iron Company finished construction on the peach-shaped tower in 1981.

It sits on Peachoid Road, between Exits 90 and 92 along Interstate 85, and is one of the South's most unusual roadside attractions.
9. Which motion picture studio released the disaster movie sequel "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" in the United States in 1979?

Answer: Warner Bros

Regarded as an unworthy successor to the blockbuster disaster hit, "The Poseidon Adventure", "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" told the story of two rival crews trying to salvage valuables and plutonium from the wrecked luxury liner. Michael Caine, Sally Field and Telly Savalas headed the obligatory all-star cast. Irwin Allen produced and directed. (Thanks to the Internet Movie Database for additional information).
10. What animal can be found on Louisiana's state flag?

Answer: Brown Pelican

Louisiana is known as The Pelican State, so it is only fitting that a pelican tending to her young appears prominently on the state flag.
