Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

The velo, or bike question wouldn't be as logical without a Non to contradict it.
2. Non, il est polonais.

Answer: Le Pape est-il italien?

Thought you'd like this one. Smart alecs.
3. J'ai perdu mon livre.

Answer: Qu'as-tu perdu?

In order to negate this one properly, you'd have to put, "Non, j'ai perdu mon livre". Whereas the Que is what.

Rosé is often said to be not as good as it's mixed. It's preferred in the summer, chilled and even with...horreur...ice cubes.
La foire aux vins is often a stand or two in the store where you purchase and taste wines for your "cave".
5. Il s'appelle Marcel.

Answer: Comment s'appelle votre chien?

Appeler is to call, s'appeler is to be called or name. It's one of those French kids' bugaboos trying to spell this right too.
6. Son père est écrivain.

Answer: Que fait son père?

This one is reasonably straightforward. You could also add, "Que fait-il son père?"
Now, this could be a masculine or feminine subject, we have no way of knowing in speech or writing. Only in context. Could be her or his.
7. Oui, nous sommes très heureux.

Answer: Etes-vous heureux?

We do know that the subject is plural because of the answer in nous.

The time you use this contradiction is when someone asks you a negative question in French. In regions bordering Italy it gets confusing because it means yes! In this instance it's saying, "Yes of course I like ice cream!" If someone asked you "Tu aimes la glace?"
"Oui, j'aime la glace." There's the difference.
9. Non, il ne m'a pas plu du tout!

Answer: Il t'a plu le film hier soir?

plaire is a really hard verb for non native speakers..and yet, it's used about twenty five thousand times a day. Il me plait, might be what a girl says about liking a guy. Tu me plais is pleasing, physically and hopefully mentally!

If you chose anything but this morning, it's a question of timing. And the fear one, well, it's not a direct answer, if we'd asked, "Qu'est-ce qu'il y a? Tu as peur de quelquechose?" then it would be a valid answer!
