John Franklin Candy was born 31st October 1950 in Newmarket, about 20 miles outside Toronto. He was the son of Evangeline and Sidney Candy. He had an older brother named Jim. Sadly, John died very early in his life at the age of 43 on 4th March 1994 of heart problems.

The spirit of Neil McNeil was best summarized by its most famous graduate, the late John Candy, who said during one of his annual visits to Neil McNeil, "My success is simply rooted in the values and discipline and respect for others that I was taught at Neil McNeil." The school was named after Neil McNeil, Archbishop of Toronto from 1912-1934. While his tenure as an Archbishop, he fought to ensure funding for Catholic secondary schools.

John did a frightening impersonation of Divine (a.k.a Harris Glenn Milstead). Divine portrayed Edna Turnblad in the 1998 movie "Hairspray". The outrageous makeup and hair were over-the-top. John Waters wrote "Hairspray" and John Travolta starred in the 2007 version based on John Waters original screenplay. Christopher Walken was in "Hairspray" (2007) movie but John Candy never impersonated him.
