John Franklin Candy was born 31st October 1950 in Newmarket, about 20 miles outside Toronto. He was the son of Evangeline and Sidney Candy. He had an older brother named Jim. Sadly, John died very early in his life at the age of 43 on 4th March 1994 of heart problems.

"Tears Are Not Enough" was a 1985 charity single performed by a number of Canadian artists.

The spirit of Neil McNeil was best summarized by its most famous graduate, the late John Candy, who said during one of his annual visits to Neil McNeil, "My success is simply rooted in the values and discipline and respect for others that I was taught at Neil McNeil." The school was named after Neil McNeil, Archbishop of Toronto from 1912-1934. While his tenure as an Archbishop, he fought to ensure funding for Catholic secondary schools.

His polka band helped get Kate McCallister (Catherine O'Hara) home. John played Freddie Bauer in "Splash" (1984) and Irving 'Irv' Blitzer in "Cool Runnings" (1993).

John played Danny Muldoon in "Only the Lonely" (1991) a cop who must learn how to break away from his overbearing mother. In "Summer Rental" (1985), he played Jack Chester, a stressed-out air traffic controller who was ordered to take a vacation. In "She's Having a Baby" (1988), he appeared uncredited as Chet from "The Great Outdoors" (1988). At the end of this movie, he suggested a name for the newborn baby born to Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern's characters.

John never did all three except in the movie "Uncle Buck".
