The concept of the Hardy Boys was created by Edward Stratemeyer in 1927. His company, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired authors to write the stories based on outlines that the Syndicate provided. Canadian author Leslie McFarlane wrote many of the early adventures but several other authors wrote Hardy Boys stories over the years. The author was paid a flat fee for writing the stories--with the earliest stories this was $125--with no royalties (bonuses based on the number of books sold).
