Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Frank and Joe Hardy are fictional teenage brothers who follow in their detective father's footsteps. They live in the fictional town of Bayport with their father Fenton, mother Laura and their Aunt Gertrude. The first thirty-eight books of the original series, written from 1927 to 1959, were 'modernized' from 1959 to 1973 to appeal to a new generation of young readers. The books were written by several ghostwriters under the name Franklin W. Dixon. The first fifty- eight books were part of "The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories" series which ran from 1927 to 2005 with some of the early novels being revised and modernized. Other series that followed included "The Hardy Boys Casefiles" series (1987 to 1998) and "The Hardy Boys Undercover" series (2005 to 2012).

The first book in the original Hardy Boy series was "The Tower Treasure". It was published in 1927. The story was rewritten in 1959 by Harriet Adams. In the revised version, the two brothers look for a man who stole their high school friend's car, as well as jewels and securities from the Tower mansion. The death bed confession of the crook, who is discovered with the help of the brother's father, leads to the boys recovering the stolen goods and receiving a reward. Leslie McFarlane wrote the original version of this book under the pseudonym Franklin W. Dixon.

McFarlane also wrote the second book in the series, titled "The House on the Cliff". Published in 1927 and revised and republished in 1959, the book sold over 1.7 million copies. In the republished story the boy's father ask them to help him on a drug smuggling case. Frank and Joe, along with high school friends, Chet Morton, Biff Hooper and Tony Prito, use their sleuthing skills to rescue the kidnapped Mr. Hardy and discover who is using a house on the cliff to smuggle drugs.

The fourth book in the original series was "The Missing Chums". Originally written in 1938, the storyline was revised in 1962. In the revised story, Frank and Joe are on the way to a costume party at Callie Shaw's house (she is Frank's girlfriend) when the boys see the bank being robbed. They also discover that their boat has been stolen. The next day the mystery deepens when their friends Chet and Biff are missing. In their investigation the brothers are also kidnapped, but escape and solve the bank robbery.

"The Shore Road Mystery" is the sixth book in the series. It was written by MacFarlane in 1928 and rewritten by David Grambs in 1964, both under the name Franklin W. Dixon. In the revised edition the boys seek to crack a car theft ring. Their friend Jack Dodd and his father become suspects. Suspicion of the Dodds heightens when they disappear, but the brothers solve the case by finding the real thieves while helping the Dodds find a treasure.

The tenth book in the original series was "What Happened at Midnight". It was first published in 1831 by MacFarlane and revised in 1967 by Tom Mulvey. In the revised version Joe disappears at midnight, while going to see who the stranger is that is snooping around the brothers' car. He is found when Aunt Gertrude provides Frank and Chet with a clue that leads to the boys rescuing Joe and breaking up a gang of thieves.

"While the Clock Ticked" is the eleventh book in the original series. Written by MacFarlane, it was published in 1932 and revised in 1962 by James Buechler. This story centers around threats being made to Raymond Dalrymple, Bayport's banker. Their investigation leads them to the "old Purdy house" outside of town. The case is solved after the brother's friend Chet Morton rescues them just before a bomb is scheduled to explode.

Volume eighteen of the series was "The Twisted Claw". The original was written by John button in 1939. It was revised by Tom Mulvey in 1969. In the newer edition, the brothers help their father thwart several museum robberies. "The Twisted Claw" refers to a title of a book which helps them solve the case.

The thirty-seventh novel in the series was "The Ghost at Skeleton Rock" which was written by James Duncan Lawrence and released in 1958. The brothers, along with their friends Chet and Tony, travel to Puerto Rico after receiving a cryptic letter from the brothers' father. In a race against time, they seek to stop a "want to be dictator" from detonating an atomic bomb.

John Duncan Lawrence was the ghostwriter for the thirty-ninth book in the original series, "The Mystery of the Chinese Junk". The boys buy a used junk to make money by ferrying people over to a local island. Soon four strangers appear, wanting the boat because there is treasure on it. With the help of their friends Chet Morton and Jim Foy as well as a private detective from Hong Kong, George Ti-Ming, the strangers who are trying to steal the boat are caught and the treasure is found.

"The Haunted Fort" was written by ghostwriter David Grambs in 1965. It was the forty-fourth book in the original Hardy Boys Mysteries Stories. In this book Chet Morton's uncle asks for help in finding the ghost that is haunting the art school located in an old fort. Chet and the Hardy boys go to investigate and recover two stolen paintings and search for a gold chain while dealing with threats from the bad guys.

"The Arctic Patrol Mystery" was ghostwritten by Andrew Svenson in 1969. It was the forty-eighth book in the original "The Hardy Boys Mystery Stores" series. In this book the brothers, along with friends Chet and Biff, go to Iceland to find a missing man and end up rescuing a kidnapped astronaut from a group of men wanting to sabotage NASA's moon project.

Vincent Buranelli wrote the fifty-first book in the series when he authored "The Masked Monkey" in 1972. In this novel Frank and Joe travel to South America in search of the son of a wealthy industrialist. The brothers face a school of flesh-eating piranhas, and a monkey trained to kill as they run across a group of criminals who run an "identity changing" business for fugitives.
