Ernest "Red" Nichols was a cornetist and bandleader during the Big Band Era. Although he played with various groups and numbers of musicians he always referred to them as The Five Pennies as a play on the word "nickel" which sounded similar to his surname. His style was heavily influenced by legendary trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke.

Nigel Mansell's first drive in Formula One with the red five on his car was in the 1985 season when he joined the Williams-Honda team. Whilst Mansell was at the peak of his career, the only requirement from the FIA was that the world champion carried number one on his car with his team-mate carrying number two. Prior to the start of the 1996 season, this changed so cars were numbered sequentially with teams being allocated numbers based on where they finished the previous season in the constructors championship.
