Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what type of cooking would you use five-spice powder?

Answer: Chinese

Five-spice powder consists of star anise, fennel, cloves, cinnamon and Szechuan pepper and is used in Chinese cooking.
2. The Olympic rings are five interlocking rings. What do they represent?

Answer: five continents

The Olympic rings stand for the five original continents that participated in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 - Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia and America. North and South America were counted as one continent.
3. Enid Blyton wrote a series of books based on the "Famous Five". The "Famous Five" were four children and a dog. They had many adventures and solved crimes and mysteries. What was the dog's name?

Answer: Timmy

The children were Julian, Dick and Anne Kirrin, along with their cousin George Kirrin. George's real name was Georgina but she wouldn't answer to that! Timothy, or Timmy, was George's dog. The "Famous Five" were the main source of inspiration for the popular American cartoon "Scooby Doo".
4. Which of the five Marx brothers legally changed his (real) first name from Adolph to Arthur around 1911.

Answer: Harpo

In order, from eldest to youngest, the Marx Brothers were Leonard (Chico), Adolph/Arthur (Harpo), Julius (Groucho), Milton (Gummo) and Herbert (Zeppo). Harpo was so-named because he played the harp. There was another brother, Manfred. Manfred was their parent's firstborn son but he died when he was two years old.

There is a popular urban legend that Harpo's name change from Adolph to Arthur was because of anti-German sentiment following the First World War but there is no real evidence for this. Apparently Harpo just didn't like the name Adolph!
5. Legendary actor Clark Gable was married five times. Who was his fifth wife?

Answer: Kay Spreckels

Gable's wives, in order, were Josephine Dillon, Ria Langham, Carole Lombard, Lady Sylvia Ashley and Kay Spreckels. Gable died in 1960. A few months after his death, Kay Spreckels gave birth to his only son, John Clark Gable.
6. In the television series, "Doctor Who", who played the Doctor's fifth persona from 1982 to 1984?

Answer: Peter Davison

Peter Davison (real name Peter Moffatt) played the fifth incarnation of the Doctor for 69 episodes. Other actors who have played Dr Who include William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann. Peter Cushing also played Dr Who in two movies - "Dr Who and the Daleks" (1965) and "Invasion Earth 2150 AD" (1966).
7. The "Jackson Five" were formed in 1964 and originally consisted of five brothers - Jermaine, Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Michael Jackson. In 1976, they changed their name to "The Jacksons" and switched labels from Motown to Epic. Jermaine stayed at Motown. Which of their siblings took Jermaine's place in the group?

Answer: Randy

The "Jackson Five" left Motown because Motown would not let them choose their songs, choose their producers, play their own instruments while recording or record songs that were not from Motown's own sources. Motown owned the name "Jackson Five", necessitating the name change to "The Jacksons". Jermaine stayed with Motown because he had married Hazel Gordy, daughter of Motown's owner, Berry Gordy.
8. There are five members of the genus Panthera, commonly known as the "great cats". Which of the following is NOT a member of this group?

Answer: cheetah

The five great cats are the tiger (Panthera tigris), lion (P. leo), jaguar (P. onca), leopard (P. pardus) and snow leopard (P. unica). Panthera is derived from the Greek "pan" (all) and "thera" (hunter), a reference to the great cats' position at the top of the food chain.
9. In the history of the Academy Awards, very few films have "scooped the pool" by winning all five major categories - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Writer, Best Actor and Best Actress. Which of the following films was the first to achieve this?

Answer: It Happened One Night

The first film to "scoop the pool" was "It Happened One Night" (1934). "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was the second one in 1975 and "The Silence of the Lambs" was third in 1991. "Dr Zhivago" (1965) also won five Oscars but none were in the five major categories.
10. "My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I've just signed legislation that'll outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in FIVE minutes". Which president was responsible for this public blunder?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

This happened in 1984 when Reagan was preparing for a radio broadcast. His "joke" was not intended to be aired but unfortunately the microphone was on.
