Viti Levu is around the same size as the largest Hawaiian island, Hawai'i. Its name means "Great Fiji". The island is split down the middle by a mountain range. The sugarcane and dairy industries are both important to the island's economy. Suva, the county's capital and largest city, is located on the southeastern coast of Viti Levu. It became the capital in 1882 after the former capital, Levuka, proved to be too restrictive.
