Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fiji is comprised of more than 300 islands and over 500 small islets in the South Pacific Ocean. What is the name of its largest island, which is also the location of the country's capital, Suva?

Answer: Viti Levu

Viti Levu is around the same size as the largest Hawaiian island, Hawai'i. Its name means "Great Fiji". The island is split down the middle by a mountain range. The sugarcane and dairy industries are both important to the island's economy.

Suva, the county's capital and largest city, is located on the southeastern coast of Viti Levu. It became the capital in 1882 after the former capital, Levuka, proved to be too restrictive.
2. Fiji was a colony of what country from 1874 to 1970?

Answer: Great Britain

Prior to being a British colony, Fiji was ruled by a collection of tribes led by chiefs. Eventually one chief, Seru Epenisa Cakobau, was able to unite some of the warring tribes and named himself the King of Fiji. He eventually ceded Fiji to Great Britain.

The country then stayed under the control of Great Britain until 1970, when Great Britain granted Fiji independence. Fiji became a republic in 1987. The first president was Penaia Kanatabatu Ganilau.
3. There are many traditional crafts that have remained popular in Fiji. Women often make tapa cloth, which is used for clothing and blankets. What is it made of?

Answer: tree bark

Tapa cloth is made out of the bark from the paper mulberry tree. The cloths are decorated with charcoal and paint. They are often worn on formal occasions and given as gifts. They are made in many other island countries in the Pacific Ocean as well.
4. What is NOT one of the three official languages of Fiji?

Answer: Tokelauan

English and Hindi became popular languages in Fiji when it was still under British rule. Hindi came from the Indians who were sent to Fiji to work. The three languages became official in the country's 1997 constitution. Many other languages are also spoken throughout Fiji.
5. Fiji made its Olympic debut in 1956 when the country sent five athletes to Melbourne, Australia for the Summer Games. Did they win any medals that year?

Answer: No

Fiji went to the Olympic Winter Games for the first time in 1988, which took place in Calgary, Canada. By 2014, Fiji had not won any Olympic medals in either the Summer Games or the Winter Games. However, at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, England, a Fijian did win a medal. Iliesa Delana won gold in the Men's High Jump F42 in Athletics.
6. What 2000 Tom Hanks movie was filmed on the Fijian island of Monuriki?

Answer: Cast Away

Monuriki is a small, uninhabited island. It is one of the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji.

"Cast Away" is about a man named Chuck Noland who ends up on a deserted island when the airplane he's on crashes. He spends years alone on the island. Tom Hanks won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama in 2000 for his role.
7. The Fiji crested iguana is considered critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Which of these is NOT true of this species?

Answer: They are found in other counties besides Fiji.

Fiji crested iguanas live in dry forests in some of the northwestern islands of Fiji. They are endangered due to habitat loss. Under normal circumstances, they are light green with white bands, but when they feel threatened, they will turn dark green to black.

They were discovered in 1981 when a herpetologist named John Gibbons saw them in the movie "Blue Lagoon" (1980), which was partially filmed in Fiji. He had been studying a related species, the Fiji banded iguana, at the time.
8. Udre Udre, a Fijian chief of the nineteenth century, has held the Guinness World Record for which of these?

Answer: most prolific cannibal

There was a time in Fiji when warfare and cannibalism ran rampant. Because of this, many Europeans avoided the country. Today, this time is known as the "time of the devil" by Fijians. Udre Udre was one such cannibal, who ate anywhere from 872 to 999 people in his lifetime. It is believed he was trying to reach one thousand so he could become immortal, but was unable to make it that far.
9. Which of these crops is NOT seen on the Fijian coat of arms?

Answer: rice

The coat of arms was adopted in 1908 and is on the flag of Fiji. The shield has a lion, a dove, sugarcane, a coconut palm, and some bananas. Two Fijian warriors support the shield. A canoe is seen above and the national motto, "Fear God and honour the Queen", is below it.
10. Which of these diseases caused the death of about one-third of Fiji's population in 1875?

Answer: measles

Roughly 40,000 Fijians died during the measles outbreak. It began in January 1875 when infected passengers came to Fiji from Australia. Since Fijians had never been exposed to the disease before, it spread quickly with devastating results. Many of the dead were buried in mass graves.
