Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Saskatchewan borders two U.S states: Montana and which of these?

Answer: North Dakota

North Dakota's northern border with Canada is 310 miles (just under 500 km) in length, and stretches between the two Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. There are at least 18 international ports dotted across this border. The border is fairly straight.

The U.S state of Alaska however, has the longest border with Canada at 1,540 miles (2,475 km) long.
2. What Canadian province borders Saskatchewan to the east?

Answer: Manitoba

Saskatchewan does border Alberta, but Alberta lies to the west.

Saskatchewan borders the federal territory of Canada, the Northwest Territories, to the north.
3. Which flower is featured on the flag of Saskatchewan?

Answer: Western red lily

Scientifically known as "Lilium philadelphicum" the western red lily is native to North America.

In 1968, the government of Saskatchewan announced they were holding a competition for the design of the Saskatchewan provincial flag. As a child, Anthony Drake and his family had emigrated to Ontario from Britain after World War II. Drake sent 13 designs in to the competition, one of which was picked. The yellow in the flag stands for the wheat fields of Saskatchewan, the green for the forests in the north of the province.

Anthony Drake remained unaware his design had won while he was in Canada. He was sent to the U.K again as he became homesick for Britain, only learning that he won the competition once he had returned to the U.K.
4. What city of Saskatchewan is located around 280 miles (450 km) from Winnipeg, the capital city of Manitoba?

Answer: Yorkton

Yorkton is situated in the south-east of Saskatchewan.

Since 1947, Yorkton has hosted the Yorkton Film Festival every May. The festival holds only Canadian productions, or international films produced by Canadians. In 2013 the last living founder of the festival, Ruth Shaw, died aged 95.
5. What is the largest, deepest and longest lake of Saskatchewan?

Answer: Lake Athabasca

Lake Athabasca is tucked into the north-west corner of Saskatchewan. The lake also stretches into the north-east corner of neighbouring Canadian province, Alberta, in the province's Wood Buffalo municipality. 74% of Lake Athabasca is located in Saskatchewan, 26% of it lies in Alberta.

The area of Lake Athabasca covers 3,030 square miles (7,850 square kilometres) and is around 175 miles (280 km) long.

Uranium and gold mining on the north shore of Lake Athabasca established Uranium City, Saskatchewan. This city is located near Saskatchewan's border with the Northwest Territories, although this is a city in name only, the population being just over 70 in 2016.
6. The deadliest tornado in Canadian history occurred in 1912, in what city of Saskatchewan?

Answer: Regina

On Sunday, June 30, 1912, the Regina Cyclone killed 28 people. The tornado was formed around 11 miles (18 km) from the city, and was around 500 feet wide (150 meters) when it hit Regina. It raged for another 7.5 miles (12 km) north before it stopped and dissipated.

English actor Boris Karloff (born William Henry Pratt) was in Regina at the time of the cyclone. He was part of a small company for actors and singers at the time called "the Jeanne Russell Players." The Jeanne Russell Players had decided to disband and go their separate ways the day before the tornado struck. This left Karloff stranded with no money in a city he did not know was about to be hit by a cyclone. Karloff survived the disaster and made a good name for himself, as well as 20 cents an hour clearing debris from the aftermath of the cyclone.

American actress Henrietta Crosman was also in Regina during the 1912 cyclone. She survived and set up stage shows and concerts in Regina following the disaster, the money going towards relief for the victims.
7. The city of Saskatoon is divided in half by what river?

Answer: South Saskatchewan River

Saskatoon is the largest city of Saskatchewan.

The South Saskatchewan River flows through both Saskatchewan and Alberta. This river used to freeze every year in the first half of the 20th century, but construction of the Gardiner Dam in the 1960s put a stop to this.
8. Which city of Saskatchewan is home to the Allen Sapp art gallery?

Answer: North Battleford

North Battleford is located in west-central Saskatchewan. Canadian news magazine, Maclean's, proclaimed North Battleford as the most dangerous city of Canada (due to its crime rate) in 2018.

Alan Sapp (1928-2015) was a Cree Canadian painter. His paintings are usually of a personal nature, many featuring his grandmother who had raised him as child after his mother died. He lived in North Battleford, and his works are well known throughout Canada.

Novelist Alistair MacLeod was born in North Battleford.
9. Which of these lakes of Saskatchewan is nicknamed "the Dead Sea of Canada"?

Answer: Little Manitou Lake

Between the cities of Saskatoon and Regina lies Little Manitou Lake. Because of high salt mineral content in this lake (about half of that of the Dead Sea) this means that swimmers have extra buoyancy, and can float in the lake easily.

Although popular for swimming, this lake is not known for its fishing because the high salt content means that other than brine shrimp, little marine life can live in it.
10. What city of Saskatchewan is located approximately 10 miles north of the Canada-United States border?

Answer: Estevan

Estevan is located in the south-east of Saskatchewan, known for its oil, mining and power generating industry. The Souris River flows by the city.

Estevan is also remembered for the 1931 Estevan riot, where striking coal miners and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police clashed, resulting in 3 deaths.
