New Zealand Regions Trivia Questions

1. What Otago town sits on a shore of a lake whose name means "Spreading water" in Maori?

From Quiz
Otago, Home of the Highlanders #3

Answer: Waihola

Waihola is a town just a few kilometers south of Mosgiel, one of Dunedin's outer suburbs. A common joke there is about a town called Waikikamukau (why kick a moo cow) but it doesn't actually exist.

2. Gabriel's Gully is considered by most historians to be the site where gold was first discovered in Otago. Starting in the 1890s, the gold rush was located closest to which Otago town?

From Quiz Otago, Home of the Highlanders #2

Answer: Lawrence

When the gold rush started, Dunedin grew rapidly in size and soon became the most heavily populated city in New Zealand. As a consequence, it became the first town in New Zealand to be declared a city.

3. The discovery of what natural resource made Dunedin become the most populated city in New Zealand in the late 1800s?

From Quiz Otago: Home of the Highlanders

Answer: Gold

Otago became the first true city in New Zealand in the 19th century due to thousands of people hoping to strike it rich on the Otago gold fields. There are still sites dotted all around Otago that date back to the historical gold rush times.

4. Which town is a self-declared republic in the Taranaki region?

From Quiz Taranaki Tour

Answer: Whangamomona

The bi-annual "republic day" is one of the highlights of any red-blooded kiwi's year. From sheep racing to whip-cracking, Whanga has it all! An excellent event for a town of about 40 people, attracting several thousand visitors from around the country. A must-do for any tourist if you ask me.

5. The town of Ophir, on the terraces above the Manuherikia Valley 20km from Alexandra, has had two names during its relatively brief existence. What was the original name?

From Quiz Place Name Oddities in Otago, N.Z.

Answer: Blacks

I've never been quite sure why the name was changed from Blacks Diggings (always shortened to Blacks) to Ophir, or why the town survived the 1860s when so many others didn't. For a while it was a stop on the stage coach route over Blacks Hill to Polnoon and the Ida Valley, and that may have been the reason why it outlasted the gold which was the reason for its existence. The hotel at the junction with the Blacks Hill Road is still called the Blacks Pub.

6. What is the Maori name for Stewart Island?

9. Why was filling of the Clyde dam hydro lake halted after it was completed?

From Quiz Otago, Home of the Highlanders #3

Answer: Rock Slides

The Clyde dam is the biggest concrete dam in Otago and took many years to complete. It caused the town of Cromwell to be relocated because the lake would submerge it. When they finally completed the dam, rock slides in the gorge could have created a flash flood wiping out towns further down the river. It took several years to eliminate all the potential rock fall areas before Lake Dunstan was filled.

10. In the 1990s, Beaumont in South Otago rejected a development because it would have required the whole town to be relocated. What was the proposed development?

From Quiz Otago, Home of the Highlanders #2

After the Clyde Dam was finished, the lake flooded the area where Cromwell was. The whole town was moved at great expense. The proposal for another dam in Beaumont would also have required the town to be moved, but the residents refused and the idea was forgotten.

Eight million years of volcanic activity (just imagine - a thousand years is a long time for humans!) that occured about 11 million years ago formed two huge craters. From Quiz Place Name Oddities in Otago, N.Z.

Answer: The Junction

The Cromwell Gorge, downstream of the town, used to be a very pretty touristy kind of road, with the greens of rosehips and cherry trees contrasting with the ochre and grey of the mountains. At Cromwell itself, the two rivers provided a stunning sight where they met immediately below the town. The brown, muddier water of the Kawarau met the glacial blue-green water of the Clutha, and the two currents ran side by side for a couple of hundred metres before they merged into a darker green. The meeting of the two large rivers was, of course, the reason why the town was originally called The Junction.
