Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gabriel's Gully is considered by most historians to be the site where gold was first discovered in Otago. Starting in the 1890s, the gold rush was located closest to which Otago town?

Answer: Lawrence

When the gold rush started, Dunedin grew rapidly in size and soon became the most heavily populated city in New Zealand. As a consequence, it became the first town in New Zealand to be declared a city.
2. In the 1990s, Beaumont in South Otago rejected a development because it would have required the whole town to be relocated. What was the proposed development?

Answer: Hydroelectric dam

After the Clyde Dam was finished, the lake flooded the area where Cromwell was. The whole town was moved at great expense. The proposal for another dam in Beaumont would also have required the town to be moved, but the residents refused and the idea was forgotten.
3. What is the tourist attraction located in Kingston?

Answer: A steam train

The Kingston Flyer is a steam train that used to operate in Otago until the late 1950s. When the trains were replaced by buses, 14km of track was kept for the locomotive to run short train journeys for tourists.
4. What kind of albatross can be viewed at the Royal Albatross Center at Taiaroa Heads near Dunedin?

Answer: Northern royal albatross

The Northern royal albatross at Taiaroa Head are the only albatross in the world to live on the New Zealand mainland rather than on an island. Dunedin is the only mainland location in the world where albatross make a home.
5. Lake Aviemore and Benmore are man-made lakes on what river?

Answer: Waitaki River

The Waitaki River is the northern border of Otago and southern border of Canterbury. Along its length are several dams creating man-made lakes. By these dams are small towns established when the dam builders lived there. Lake Benmore is the largest man-made lake in New Zealand.
6. The border between Otago and Westland is at the top of which mountain pass?

Answer: Haast Pass

Haast Pass is 562m above sea level at its highest point and was completely tarmac-sealed in 1995. The other passes over the Southern Alps are in Canterbury.
7. Humphrey, a huge elephant seal, was regularly seen during the 1990s on which town's beach 27km north of Dunedin?

Answer: Aramoana

Humphrey could often be seen lying on the spit at Aramoana. He was roughly 12 feet long. I was told one of the harbour pilots was dropped off at the spit at night and was chased by Humphrey when he accidentally came too close.
8. The headland at the end of St Kilda Beach, Dunedin, is named after which of these legal professions?

Answer: Lawyer

Lawyers Head is a cliff headland now closed off to the public due to suicides that have occurred there. It is named Lawyers Head because is resembles a lawyer's face wearing the traditional wig.
9. Which natural resource bears the name of the Otago town located close to where it comes from?

Answer: Oamaru Stone

Oamaru stone is a kind of limestone mined from a quarry near the North Otago town. Many buildings in the old main street of Oamaru are made from it.
10. Along the road to Port Chalmers from Dunedin, there are several small lagoons beside the road. Which bay is the largest of these lagoons, in surface area?

Answer: Blanket Bay

Blanket Bay is just one of a number of bays along that stretch of road. There is a small suburb named after it. The railway causeway is a good place to view trains before they disappear into a tunnel.
