Guards! Guards! Trivia Questions

1. At the beginning of 'Guards! Guards!', Vimes was drunk and staggering back to the Watch House. What was his position within the Night Watch?

From Quiz
#8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: Captain

'Guards! Guards!' was the first of the City Watch books. Vimes ascended through the ranks as the series progressed, but he remained a captain throughout the novel. He had lost hope in his vocation as Lord Vetinari allowed criminals to rise to the top of society through the Thieves Guild.

2. Who was the original Captain of the Night Watch?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's Discworld - "Guards! Guards!"

Answer: Samuel Vimes

Sam Vimes, later to be His Grace the Duke of Ankh (Commander) Sir Samuel Vimes, was originally the Captain of the Night Watch, beneath him being Sergeant Fred Colon, Corporal "Nobby" Nobbs and a new addition to the rank, Lance-Constable (later Captain) Carrot Ironfoundersson (a dwarf that was technically a human).

3. How did Carrot get his name?

From Quiz 'Guards! Guards!' Random Questions

Answer: His shape

"It is the kind of tapering shape a boy gets through clean living, healthy eating, and good mountain air in huge lungfuls. When he flexes his shoulder muscles, other muscles have to move out of the way first."

4. Carrot is from which species?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!"

Answer: Dwarf

Whilst Carrot is a human, he has been brought up to be just like a Dwarf. He can understand and talk to them and know their way of living.

5. The Night Watch had a new member. He was young and keen and he had a vegetable-themed name. What was it?

From Quiz #8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: Carrot & Carrot Ironfoundersson

Carrot was raised by dwarves, even though he was a six-foot tall human. He had been adopted as a baby after his parents were killed. In 'Guards! Guards!', he set off for Ankh-Morpork to join the Watch, thinking it would be the start of a respectable career. The new recruit lived by the pages of 'The Laws And Ordinances of The Cities of Ankh And Morpork', not realising that the book was outdated. His arrival (and his unabashed desire to follow the law to the letter) caused quite a stir in the city.

6. Who was the President of the Guild of Thieves arrested by Carrot?

From Quiz 'Guards! Guards!' Random Questions

Answer: Urdo Van Pew

Mr. Boggis is the head of the Thieves' Guild in 'Feet of Clay'. Downey becomes Master of the Assassins' Guild after 'Men At Arms' in which Dr. Whiteface first appears as the head of the Fool's Guild.

7. Carrot was told not to enter any bars. Why does he enter one when he wants to join the watch?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!"

Answer: Because he had to talk to Vimes, who didn't come out of the bar

Vimes didn't come out of the pub, so he ventured inside. This is because well... Vimes loves his drink!

8. Which chimpanzee-like man was tasked with teaching the new recruit 'the ropes'?

From Quiz #8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: Corporal Nobbs

Corporal Nobbs was a former street urchin of indeterminate age. He was short, unclean, and an incessant smoker of dog-ends. When Carrot joined the watch, Nobby took him on patrol. He realised that the new recruit was a naive idealist who was keen to arrest anyone doing anything remotely illegal (which, in Ankh-Morpork, often included Corporal Nobbs). After making numerous arrests - to the inconvenience of the rest of the Watch and their tiny jail - Carrot came to understand the nuances of being a member of the Watch in the Discworld's largest city. However, he did complain that Nobby hadn't even shown him one rope.

9. What was the last name of the recently deceased Watch member?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's Discworld - "Guards! Guards!"

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!"

11. Which member of the Watch communicated with their wife via written notes?

From Quiz #8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: Sergeant Fred Colon

Colon worked nights in the Watch and his wife worked during the day. Their working hours rarely overlapped so they wouldn't normally see each other at home. The sergeant would make his wife's tea before his shift started, and she would make his breakfast before heading to work in the morning. The system had permitted them thirty years of married happiness. Vimes believed that their three children were the 'result of extremely persuasive handwriting'.

12. On which street did Lady Ramkin live?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's Discworld - "Guards! Guards!"

Answer: Scoone Avenue

Scoone Avenue was in one of the most select parts of Ankh.

13. When Colon and Nobby are "undercover", what title do they use for each other?

From Quiz 'Guards! Guards!' Random Questions

Answer: Detector

Vimes wants them to be inconspicuous. As it turns out, their choice of clothes is so outrageous he decides that nobody would ever look at them and think they were Watchmen trying to be inconspicuous.

14. Peculiar, fiery killings were going on in Ankh-Morpork. Which expert did Vimes consult?

From Quiz #8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: Lady Sybil Ramkin, dragon breeder

Lady Sybil Ramkin was a swamp dragon breeder. She lived in a grand, old house with a dragon pen outside. From Quiz #8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: The Librarian

The Librarian had been turned into an orangutan as a result of a magical accident in 'The Light Fantastic'. He enlisted the help of Carrot because a crime had been committed: a crime worse than murder. When the young watchman discovered that the Librarian was worried about a missing book, he was initially irritated. That was until he realised the book provided instructions to summon a dragon. Releasing Feral Creatures Upon the Streets was illegal.

18. What is Lady Ramkin's first name?

21. The Watch motto hung above the door, though the sign had been eroded over time. Which words were still visible?

From Quiz #8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: Fabricati diem, pvnc

Sergeant Colon insisted that the motto translated to 'to protect and serve'. The Discworld was littered with Latin-esque phrases, many of them puns. 'Fabricati diem, pvnc' roughly translates to 'Make my day, punk'. The Watch House on Treacle Mine Road had once been grand, but in 'Guards! Guards!' was old and crumbling. Many of the uninhabitable sections were home to pests and vermin.

22. Vimes found himself imprisoned in the palace dungeon with his superior. Which man (who had rats as servants) also occupied the cell?

From Quiz #8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: Lord Vetinari

Lord Vetinari was the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork and the man that Captain Vimes was supposed to report to concerning the dragon case. Things didn't quite go to plan when the Patrician was arrested. A long-lost heir to the throne had arrived and slain the dragon, so Vetinari was thrown into the dungeon. Vimes deduced that the dragon had been summoned using magic and confronted Lupine Wonse (formerly the Patrician's secretary). The palace guards put Vimes in the dungeon, too. He found Vetinari living quite comfortably with an entourage of rat-servants.

25. When the Watch House on Treacle Mine Road was destroyed, which building became the new Night Watch base?

From Quiz #8 'Guards! Guards!': Welcome to the Watch

Answer: Pseudopolis Yard

The Watch House on Treacle Mine Road burned down due to dragon activity. The old building was run-down any way, but with no money to spare, they couldn't afford anywhere new. Lady Sybil Ramkin gave Pseudopolis Yard, her childhood home, to Captain Vimes and the Night Watch. Given that it was a tavern, some members of the Watch might have enjoyed using The Mended Drum as a base, but they probably wouldn't have got much work done. The Watch continued to operate out of Pseudopolis Yard in later 'Discworld' books, too. The name 'Pseudopolis Yard' is a play on 'pseudo-police' and 'Scotland Yard', London's police headquarters.

26. What is the fictitious political entity to be found on the Counterweight Continent?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's Discworld - "Guards! Guards!"
