Name the Play Trivia Questions

1. Young sworn enemies Fall in love, marry, and die. Their death buries strife. Can you name the play?

From Quiz
Shakespeare In Haiku

Answer: Romeo and Juliet

"In fair Verona, where we lay our scene." "Romeo and Juliet" is one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. Unfortunately, the two lovers both die at the end of the play, but the feud between the Montagues and Capulets is ended. "Do with their death bury their parents' strife."

2. Which play features the lesser known lovers Lorenzo and Jessica, along with primary characters Bassanio and Portia?

From Quiz Why do Fools Fall in Love?

Answer: The Merchant of Venice

The play focuses on the love between Bassanio and Portia. Jessica is Shylock's daughter who elopes with Lorenzo and converts to Christianity, much to her father's dismay. One of the things I remember about this play is the poem in the gold casket which begins "All that glisters is not gold." The first time I read this, I immediately thought of Aragorn's poem in "The Lord of the Rings" which begins "All that is gold does not glitter."

3. Feste appears in this comedy, where he sings for Countess Olivia and Duke Orsino. He criticizes both of their approaches to love, either directly or through lyrics in the songs he sings. Which Shakespeare play is this?

From Quiz Playing the Fool

Answer: Twelfth Night

Olivia is mourning for her brother's death and Feste proves her a "fool". Given the fact that Olivia says her brother is in heaven (a happy place), mourning is illogical. "What is love? 'Tis not hereafter. Present mirth hath present laughter." Feste's lyrics refers to both Olivia and Orsino, who are moping around because of "love" - he suggests that it is not genuine love.

4. Which play has a royal couple (a king and queen) dealing with the king's rocky relationship with his stepson/nephew who may be mad, the murder of a courtier, and the suicide of a young woman from the castle?

From Quiz The Key to a Happy Marriage

Answer: Hamlet

"Hamlet," the classic - Claudius and Gertrude spend the entire play married, but face Hamlet's madness, Polonius' death, and Ophelia's suicide, which many readers and critics theorize drives them apart. By the end of the play, Claudius tells Laertes how passion fades over time, which may be a glancing reference to his marriage.

5. Thankless daughters, worse than serpent's teeth, vie for power and prestige! Narcissistic old king wanders moors in storm while winds blow and crack cheeks! In which great tragedy does the jester know all?

From Quiz Shakespeare Headlines!

Answer: King Lear

Among the greats who have played this challenging role have been James Earl Jones, Brian Cox, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Derek Jacobi and, of course, Olivier. In recent years, Lear has risen over Hamlet as the preeminent Shakespearean tragedy, with Gloucester's on-stage blinding considered by many to be the most terrifying moment in Shakespeare's canon.

6. Prince dallies; father unamused.

From Quiz Shakespeare Play Summaries in Four Words

Answer: Henry IV Part I

Henry IV has just usurped the throne of England from Richard II. Richard's former supporters plot against Henry; in the meantime, the king's son Henry (also called Hal) cavorts with low company, including the fat knight Falstaff, one of Shakespeare's most beloved characters. His father is ashamed of him, but Prince Hal reveals that he will cast off his playfulness when the right time comes. All of the plots converge at the battle of Shrewsbury, the outcome of which sets the stage for "Henry IV Part II."

7. Sir Toby Belch sneaks into the lead with the most lines, just three ahead of Olivia, in this play, which is set in Illyria after a shipwreck.

From Quiz Who Are Shakespeare's Chattiest Characters?

Answer: Twelfth Night (or What You Will)

As you might guess from his surname, Sir Toby was a rude old drunkard. He formed a mischievous trio with Sir Andrew Aguecheek and the jester, Feste.

8. From which Shakespearean play did the author Agatha Christie 'borrow' the title of her play "The Mousetrap"?

From Quiz I Ask You Is It Bad To Steal From The Bard?

Answer: Hamlet

"The Mousetrap" has been thrilling audiences from around the world for as long as HRH Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne. I went to see it in 1974 and it had been running for over twenty years then. No spoilers from me but it is worth going to see as a play as well as for its history. It is the world's longest running theatrical production and is still going strong in London.

9. "In apprehension, how like a god!"

From Quiz The Immortal Words of the Bard of Avon

Answer: Hamlet

Hamlet says this to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Act II, scene ii. Claudius has called on Hamlet's old friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to spy on Hamlet and discern the reason for his madness. When it is revealed that they have been summoned by the king, Hamlet speaks of the evilness in mankind. In describing men, Hamlet's speech starts, "What a piece of work is man!"

10. "My dear master, my captain and my emperor, let me say, before I strike this bloody stroke, farewell."

From Quiz Help, Shakespeare, I'm Dying!

Answer: Antony and Cleopatra

Said to Antony by Eros before he kills himself by throwing himself onto his sword.

11. "Where the bee sucks, there suck I" is sung by a merry sprite from this play.

From Quiz More Songs from Shakespeare's Plays

Answer: The Tempest

The sprite in question is Ariel, who sings here of his carefree, idyllic life Act V, scene 1 after Prospero promises his freedom.

12. "Who is Sylvia?" ("Who is Sylvia? What is she, that all our swains commend her? Holy, fair, and wise is she. The heav'ns such grace did lend her that she might admired be.")

From Quiz Songs From Shakespeare's Plays

Answer: Two Gentlemen of Verona

Sung by Proteus and Thurio under Sylvia's window. Franz Schubert wrote a famous setting of this (in German).

13. There once was a king of the Brits ... whose wife was the absolute pits ... she plotted the slaughter ... of his only daughter ... till her son was cut up into bits.

From Quiz Shakespeare Limericks 3

Answer: Cymbeline

Astonishingly, despite various decapitations and attempted poisonings, Cymbeline is officially classed as a "Comedie". As I've remarked before in FunTrivia Quizzyland, Shakespeare has a somewhat different idea of comedy than most.

14. There once was a Roman who died ... when he didn't beware of an ide ... But his treacherous mates ... suffered much deserved fates ... when Dante had the pair of them fried

From Quiz Shakespeare Limericks 2

Answer: julius caesar

Brutus and Cassius suffered eternal torment in the lowest level of "Dante's Inferno". That'll learn 'em.

15. 'The Moon Is Down' by John Steinbeck.

From Quiz Book Titles From Shakespeare

Answer: Macbeth

'The moon is down, I have not heard the clock.'

16. 'Thrift, thrift, Horatio! the funeral baked meats Did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables.'

From Quiz I'm Hungry

Answer: Hamlet

The 'Horatio' is a giveaway. In Act I, Scene 2, Hamlet is commenting on how quickly his mother remarried after his father died.

17. There once was a lunatic Dane ... Whose father was horribly slain ... His mum married the swine ... Who'd committed the crime ... And his girl ended up in a drain.

From Quiz Shakespeare Limericks

Answer: Hamlet

I think the limerick format really brings out the tragedy, don't you?

18. 1940's 'Boys From Syracuse'?

21. They come from two warring and feuding families yet, they fall deeply in love, marry, and commit suicide ALL in one week. What is the name of this play?

From Quiz Name that Book II: SHAKESPEARE!

Answer: Romeo and Juliet

It is "Romeo and Juliet". If you got it wrong, you have 1.) never read the play, 2.) been living in a cave all your life, 3.) haven't seen the 1968 or 1996 movie versions, or 4.) all of the above.

22. Ghost on battlements, Poison, treachery, murder. Mad son seeks revenge. Can you name the play?

From Quiz Shakespeare In Haiku

Answer: Hamlet

"Hamlet" may be Shakespeare's most famous play. Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, learns from his father's ghost that he was murdered by his brother, Claudius. Hamlet vows to obtain revenge. There is some debate as to whether Hamlet actually goes insane during the course of the play, but his actions certainly suggest it.

23. One of Shakespeare's best known comedies, which play has several lovers including Hermia and Lysander, Helena and Demetrius, and the fairy couple Oberon and Titania?

From Quiz Why do Fools Fall in Love?

Answer: A Midsummer Night's Dream

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" follows several couples, some of whom are in love with their partners while others are in love with a member of another couple. The fairies help out a little so that everyone ends up as part of a loving couple. Like other Shakespeare plays, most notably "Hamlet", there is a play within the play, although in this case the actors are controlled by the fairies.

24. Touchstone is the jester for Duke Frederick in this comedy. He falls in love and later marries Audrey. Which play is this?

From Quiz Playing the Fool

Answer: As You Like It

Touchstone often gets threatened with the whip - a common threat with Shakespearean fools. One of his more famous quotes is, "The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool."

25. Which play has Bertram forcefully married to Helena in the beginning, and trying to flee her for most of the action? Their marriage survives Bertram's low attempts to bed the Italian virgin Diana and even a war!

From Quiz The Key to a Happy Marriage

Answer: All's Well That Ends Well

"All's Well That Ends Well" features this awful forced wedding of the Count Bertram to the lovesick Helena. He doesn't love her, but challenges her to an impossible task to win his love - get his prized ring from his hand, and become pregnant with his child. Let's just say she's a lot smarter than he is, so... their "love" wins out.

26. Forest romp; everybody marries.

From Quiz Shakespeare Play Summaries in Four Words

Answer: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Two sets of lovers, under the fairy king Oberon's spells, fall for the wrong partners while in the woods. There is also a subplot about the fairy queen Titania falling in love with a man whose head has been replaced with that of a donkey.
