Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Thrift, thrift, Horatio! the funeral baked meats Did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables.'

Answer: Hamlet

The 'Horatio' is a giveaway. In Act I, Scene 2, Hamlet is commenting on how quickly his mother remarried after his father died.
2. 'You Banbury Cheese!'

Answer: The Merry Wives of Windsor

Falstaff hurls this insult at Slender in Act 1, Scene 1. Banbury cheese is very pale and apparently this is a comment about Slender's non-rosy complexion. This is not the only cheesy insult that Slender receives. Later in the play, he is referred to as 'Whey-faced' .
3. 'Yes, verily and in truth, you shall take {it;} or I have another leek in my pocket, which you shall eat.'

Answer: King Henry V

As far as I can tell, Shakespeare uses the word leek 11 times in Henry V, and 0 times in the rest of his plays. I can just imagine him writing Henry V, munching on leeks, and saying 'Wow. These are good.' Fluellen says the above line to Pistol in Act V, Scene 1. Sounds like leeks had some sort of double entendre meaning back then.
4. 'What you egg! Young fry of Treachery!'

Answer: Macbeth

The phrase is uttered by one of the unnamed murderers while he is killing McDuff's son at the end of Act IV, Scene 2.
5. 'Ceres, most bounteous lady, thy rich leas Of wheat, rye, barley, vetches, oats and {pease;'}

Answer: The Tempest

In Act IV, Scene 1, Ariel summons some spirits to bless Ferdinand and Miranda before their wedding. The first spirit, Iris, summons Ceres (the Greek goddess of agriculture) with a soliloquy that starts with this line.
6. 'To rain a shower of commanded tears, An onion will do well for such a shift,'

Answer: The Taming of the Shrew

Using an onion to fake tears -- the oldest acting trick in the book. The lord says this in Act I, Scene 2.
7. 'Virtue! a fig! 'tis in ourselves that we are thus and thus.'

Answer: Othello

Iago said this to Roderigo in Act I, Scene 3. after Roderigo says 'What should I do? I confess it is my shame to be so {fond;} but it is not in my virtue to amend it' while talking about Desdemonda. This is the scene where Iago convinces Roderigo to disguise himself and accompany Othello and Desdemonda to Cyprus.
8. 'I cannot do't without counters. Let me {see;} what am I to buy for our sheep-shearing feast? Three pound of sugar, five pound of currants, rice,--what will this sister of mine do with rice? But my father hath made her mistress of the feast, and she lays it on. She hath made me four and twenty nose-gays for the shearers, three-man-song-men all, and very good {ones;} but they are most of them means and {bases;} but one puritan amongst them, and he sings psalms to horn-pipes. I must have saffron to colour the warden {pies;} {mace;} dates?--none, that's out of my {note;} nutmegs, {seven;} a race or two of ginger, but that I may {beg;} four pound of prunes, and as many of raisins o' the sun.'

Answer: Winters Tale

The above line was said by a clown to Autolycus in Act IV, scene 2 while buying supplies for a feast.
9. 'Good morrow, gallants! want ye corn for bread? I think the Duke of Burgundy will fast Before he'll buy again at such a rate'

Answer: Henry VI, Part I

Act III, Scene 1. Joan of Arc is telling the Duke of Burgundy that he got the short end of a deal.
10. 'Good worts! good cabbage. Slender, I broke your head. What matter have you against me?'

Answer: The Merry Wives of Windsor

I know that I repeated a play, but I liked the Banbury cheese quote and I liked Q9 and Q10 because these were two foods that I found that were not listed on www.soupsong.com, a website that includes a page of Shakesperian food references. I did not discover this site until the end of my research for this quiz.

This comment was also made by Falstaff to Slender, just prior to his Banbury cheese comment.
