"Murder in Mesopotamia" with Hercule Poirot Quiz

Answer: Nurse Amy Leatheran

Nurse Amy Leatheran is hired to come and look after the wife of an archaeologist. Mrs Louise Leidner, according to her husband Doctor Eric Leidner, has "fancies". The Doctor is an American-Swede. The archaeological dig is in Tell Yarimjah. Mrs Leidner is not popular with everybody on the expedition.

Answer: Countryside

Mrs Leidner finally opens to Nurse Leatheran. She tells her that she was married before, her husband was a spy in German pay. He was shot as a spy. It is possible that Frederick Bosner is still alive. Frederick also had a younger brother. Mrs Leidner has been receiving threatening anonymous letters. She is frightened that the writer is going to kill her.

Answer: Cup

Mrs Leidner is visibly terrified when an Iraqi comes into the camp by accident and is seen looking in at her window. She seems to be frightened of a flesh and blood person. The anonymous letters which she has been receiving is similar to Mrs Leidner's own handwriting.

Answer: Captain Maitland

Mrs Leidner is found dead in her bedroom, from a blow to her head. She is discovered by her husband. Bill Coleman goes to get Captain Maitland. Doctor Reilly estimates the time of death about half past one. During this time, Doctor Leidner was busy on the roof. It looks as if Mrs Leidner was killed by one of the expedition.

Answer: Baghdad

Doctor Reilly suggests that he approaches Poirot and asks him to help them investigate Mrs Leidner's death. Everyone who is associated with the dig was in different places when Mrs Leidner was killed, and most of them have alibis.

Answer: By the washstand

Doctor Reilly says if Mrs Leidner was kneeling when she was struck, the blow might have not been so powerful, so a woman may have killed her. The bloodstain is on a goatskin rug. Poirot comments that Mr Mercado's arm is covered in hypodermic marks. He is later found to be addicted to drugs.

Answer: A mask

Poirot accidentally stubs his toe and lets out a cry, which startles Miss Johnson. But Nurse Leatheran, in another room, does not hear the cry. Miss Johnson comments that there have been very few inscribed objects for Father Lavigny to translate. Poirot says the mask is the face that Mrs Leidner saw, outside her window.

Answer: Hydrochloric acid

Mrs Johnson is found dead in her room. She manages to say something to Nurse Leatheran about the window, before she dies. Nurse Leatheran is convinced Miss Johnson saw something from the roof.

Answer: Quern

The acid that killed Miss Johnson was from the laboratory. The quern has hair on it; this is what killed Mrs Leidner. Father Lavigny has disappeared. It is later revealed he is a clever forger, who has been duplicating the antiques, and replacing them with fakes.

Answer: Doctor Leidner

Poirot shows how Mr Leidner could have killed his wife, while on the roof. He made the mask (that had frightened his wife before) tap on his wife's window. When Mrs Leidner opens the window - knowing someone is playing a trick - he drops the heavy quern on top of her. Doctor Leidner is revealed to be Frederick Bosner, Mrs Leidner's first husband.
