Jack Mort is an important character in the series in that he is the one responsible for Odetta's multiple personality syndrome (which is caused when he pushes a brick out of a window and it lands on her head) and for her missing legs (he pushes Odetta in front of a moving train). However, he does not become a part of the ka-tet. Roland pushes him in front of the same train that Odetta was pushed in front of and he dies. Odetta and Detta are then forced to acknowledge each other's presence and combine to become Susannah.

Stephen King does not even attempt to hide this, as Roland's descended from the first king of All-World, Arthur Eld, who used his sword, Excalibur, to help him bring order to the realm. Excalibur itself provided the metal used to forge the guns which Roland now bears. The Man in Black is a direct descendant of Maerlyn the Magician.

It is Henry's downward spiral into drug addiction that ultimately leads to Eddie getting addicted himself and getting involved in other illegal activities.
