Before he directed "Battlefield Earth", Roger Christian had a stellar resume, with an Academy Award nomination for "Alien" and an Oscar statue for "Star Wars". "Battlefield Earth" was a complete clunker for Christian, as he and the film won several Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Director, Worst Picture, Worst Picture of the Decade, and Worst Drama of for the first 25 years of Golden Raspberry awards. In this picture, Travolta played a Psychlo, a race of giants that had taken over Earth and enslaved humans. Canadian Barry Pepper co-starred as Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, a human who led a rebellion against the Psychlos.

Answer: Wild Wild West

The list of nominees for the 1999 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture featured rather high profile films: 'Big Daddy', 'The Haunting', 'The Blair Witch Project', 'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace' and 'Wild Wild West'. You can make your own mind up as to which of these films is the worst (my choice would be 'The Blair Witch Project' with all its deliberately dodgy camerawork) but the Razzies chose to honour 'Wild Wild West', a film that many critics felt failed to deliver on its promise. 'Wild Wild West', whose plot centred around James West (Will Smith), Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline) and Rita Escobar (Salma Hayek) pursuing a rogue inventor who planned to assassinate President Ulysses S. Grant, isn't particularly memorable but is a pleasant enough way by which to pass a quiet evening. On the positive side, the train used by Smith, Kline and Hayek had fantastic interior decoration!

Brooke Shields plays the teen girl Emmeline in "The Blue Lagoon" (1980), and Christopher Atkins plays the teen boy Richard. These kids are alone on a deserted island from when they are very young, and when they come of age they fall in love with each other. Brooke Shields was also nominated for a Razzie for her role in "Endless Love" (1981) and in "Sahara" (1984). Christopher Atkins was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor for his part in "The Blue Lagoon", but would later also win a Razzie (for his role in "A Night in Heaven", 1983). Polly Walker plays the part of Mary McGregor, the love interest of Robinson Crusoe, in the 1997 movie "Robinson Crusoe" (with Pierce Brosnan in the title role). In "The Swiss Family Robinson" (1975), Pat Delaney plays the part of Lottie, the daughter of the family. Marie Westbrook plays the lead in the direct-to-video production "Titanic II" (2010), a movie about a ship experiencing the famous Titanic disaster once again, exactly 100 years later.

Roberto Remigio Benigni was born on the October 27th, 1952 in Manciano La Misericordia, Italy. He started out his acting career in 1971 in the theatre and gradually appeared in both televison and movie roles. In 1991 he married actress Nicoletta Braschi. He is probably most famous for the 1997 movie "La Vita è Bella (Life is Beautiful)", a movie about a Jewish Italian who tries to help his family during their time in a concentration camp in the Second World War. The movie "Pinocchio" was released in 2002, with the language spoken being Italian. It is based on the story by Carlo Collodi. Roberto Benigni directed the movie and starred in the title role. The movie was later dubbed into English using famous stars such as Glenn Close and John Cleese. It did not seem to please the critics, with a total of six nominations at the Golden Raspberry Awards.

Kevin Kline won Best Supporting Actor for his work as Otto in "A Fish Called Wanda" and Worst Screen Couple along with Will Smith for "Wild Wild West". It is amazing that an actor can go from showing such comedic versatility in "A Fish Called Wanda" to portraying another comedic character so poorly in "Wild Wild West". His work in "Wild Wild West" was rated as so bad Robert Conrad came to accept the awards to show his support of their choice. Adam Sandler won in 1999 for Worst Actor, and Sylvester Stallone for Worst Actor of the Century.

"Glitter" was supposed to be a vehicle for Mariah Carey, whose career had been on the ascent for several years. With this film, it came to hard stop. In later interviews, Carey indicated that she believed the movie suffered because its soundtrack was released on September 11th, 2001, the day of the terrorist attacks on the United States. The movie was a flop with critics and Carey won the 22nd Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress.

The fact that "Freddy Got Fingered" was co-written, directed and starring Tom Green may tell you something. This is a 2001 black comedy about a struggling cartoonist who has failed in Hollywood and returns home to live with his parents and younger brother, Freddy. Gord (Tom Green) is in constant conflict with his father and winds up concocting a terrible lie about his father molesting his brother. Even the title of this movie is distasteful!

'Christopher Columbus: The Discovery' was plagued with directing, casting and financial issues, leading to six Razzie nominations: Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay (Mario Puzo), Worst Director (John Glen, who replaced George Pan Cosmatos shortly before filming began, causing Timothy Dalton and Isabella Rossellini to leave the film), Worst New Star (George Corraface, who replaced Dalton as Columbus), and two nominations for Worst Supporting Actor (Marlon Brando as Torquemada and the winner, Tom Selleck as King Ferdinand). It was one of a number of films released in 1992 to try and capitalize on the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyage.

Answer: Swept Away

If the (decent) movie "Overboard" got marooned on an island with psychotics, it would become "Swept Away". Even sadder, this is a remake of the beautiful Lina Wertmuller film from 1974. The remake was directed by Guy Ritchie and starred his then-wife Madonna as a spoiled self-centered woman (hmmmm) who winds up ship-wrecked on a beautiful island with her employee (a former soldier). The roles reverse, he strips her of her vanity (and everything else), and so she falls in love with him (yeah, right!). I mean, this movie beat out "Attack of the Clones" for worst picture; can you imagine?

Brooke Shields plays the role of the heiress of a race pilot. In order to enter a cross-Saharan car race, she disguises herself as a man by putting on a fake moustache, which she then discards as soon as the race is on. But the sand is not the only hazard in a Sahara race. Brooke is kidnapped by a local tribe, and falls in love with one of the sheiks. Reviews of this movie on IMDB give a mixed image. Apparently sheik Jaffar (role by Lambert Wilson) gets many praises, but the opinions on Brooke Shields are quite divergent. Obviously the critics were unanimous in their judgement. Brooke won the Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actor and was nominated the Worst Leading Actress as well, for the same role. Barbra Streisand played a male yeshiva student in "Yentl" (1983). Julie Andrews played both title roles in the comedy "Victor, Victoria" (1982). Gwyneth Paltrow showed up as Viola de Lesseps, who impersonates Thomas Kent to be able to play a part in some of Shakespeare's masterpieces.

In this movie, Eddie Murphy played Pluto Nash, who has opened a popular nightclub on the moon. He and his love interest, played by Rosario Dawson, ran into trouble with the mob in the dystopian film. This movie falls in a low point in Murphy's professional career, as it was after the successful "Beverly Hills Cop" and before the hit "Dreamgirls".

Oh boy! Yet another picture truly deserving of a Razzie... "Gigli". Remember Bennifer - those sweet(?) old days when Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were a couple? Well, whatever they did on their own time was their business, but the relationship certainly did not carry over to the big screen. Even the plot is offensive, i.e. kidnapping a psychologically challenged young man to get to his brother who was a federal prosecutor. When Gigli (Ben) can't hack it, they bring in Ricki (J. Lo) and guess what... they fall in love (surprise!).

Seven years prior to getting the Razzie, Costner was nominated for the 1990 Best Actor Oscar for his performance in "Dances With Wolves" and won the Best Director Oscar for that film. "The Postman" was based on a novel by science fiction writer, David Brin, who was pleased with the screen adaptation, despite its rejection by the public and film critics.

The first "Basic Instinct" received praise for its intensity and visual style; its sequel received a big thumbs down from critics, and the audiences stayed away as well. The box office numbers were dismal. Even actors stayed away --it was reportedly difficult for the filmmakers to find a male lead. In this movie, Stone's Catherine Tramell was up to her mind-playing games. After being suspected of killing a man, she was sent to see a psychiatrist who conducted a mental exam. Only she turned the tables on the doctor and more dead bodies keep showing up as fact and fiction blurred.

This was a particularly good year for bad films... and the loser is "Catwoman". In this movie, they have even changed Catwoman's alias from Selena Kyle to Patience Phillips (to protect the innocent?). We are presented with a woman who has the speed, reflexes and senses of a cat, but she is shy?! Halle Berry is no Storm ("X-Men" reference) in this one. She is doggedly (ha!) pursued by a detective who is fascinated with her dual personas. Oh, you want a plot? It is about some corporate conspiracy; however, I think the movie-goers were more interested in Halle Berry in that cat suit.

Answer: Jackass: The Movie

"Jackass: The Movie" is based on the MTV show of same name that shows just how far some people will go to do stupid stunts and focused on bringing in the MTV crowd. You would think that that would be enough to at least get a nomination in the category that asks: What movie uses the latest teen trends and exploits them for an easy dollar? Although it didn't win this award, "Crossroads" did win for so blatantly using the pop star icon to draw both horny teenage boys and idolizing scantily clad girls to the theaters. It also won Worst Actress, (Britney Spears, who tied with Madonna for her work in "Swept Away"). "Crossroads" also won Worst Original Song, "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman". This award was not continued into the 2003 awards.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were one of the first super couples that commanded expansive and invasive media coverage, so much so that they were lumped together as "Bennifer" for much of their 18-month relationship. The tanking of "Gigli", which earned multiple Razzies, probably did not enhance their relationship. They cancelled their elaborately-prepared wedding and broke up a few months after the movie's release. In this movie, Ben starred as Gigli, a mobster who really didn't like violence but was sent to kidnap an innocent man in order to manipulate a federal prosecutor who was prosecuting the mob family's boss, played by Al Pacino. His partner in crime was was played by Jennifer Lopez.

The fact that, of all the choices above, the 'winner', "Dirty Love", is the only film I never heard of must mean something. The beautiful Jenny McCarthy plays the clumsy Rebecca who finds her handsome boyfriend in bed with another woman (they couldn't rent a hotel room?). They break-up, she breaks down, she looks for love in all the wrong places. Does she ever find love? You can ask the person who saw the film. BTW, the film was directed by McCarthy's then-husband, John Asher; a deadly combination.

The movie, which did not recoup in U.S. theaters the cost of its production, followed the story of Dr. Marshall when he and his cohorts and pulled into a time warp and need to outrun and outsmart a variety of dangers. This film earned several Razzie nominations, including Worst Director, Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Actor. It won the Razzie for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel.

In 'Monster's Ball', Halle Berry played Leticia Musgrove, who fell in love with Hank Grotowski (Billy Bob Thornton), a security guard who had assisted in the execution of her husband, and whose son committed suicide. They met when her son died after being hit by a car, and initially found solace in their common sense of loss. Her performance won widespread acclaim, but 'Catwoman' was another story. Halle Berry played Patience Phillips, who becomes Catwoman, a woman who is turning into a cat after dying and being resurrected by an Egyptian Mau cat, and who seeks revenge on those who killed her. It was a bit surprising that the sequel to 1999's "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo" was ever made, considering how poor the reviews were for that film. But "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" was made in 2005 and received even lower critical ratings; Roger Ebert gave it zero stars out of five. The movie followed the Deuce on a trip to Amsterdam, where he, naturally, had to solve a murder.

I'll give you a clue - the motion picture rating on this film was 'R' for "grisly violence, including torture and disturbing gory images and for sexuality, nudity and language". But wait; the piece de resistance - it starred Lindsey Lohan (remember her from her court appearances?). The plot of "I Know Who Killed Me" involved a high school student named Aubrey Fleming who disappears and is found unconscious in the woods two weeks later. When she wakes up she thinks she is Dakota Moss, a character Aubrey created for an English assignment. Actually, that sounds like it could have been interesting.

It is not clear why this award was not given this year as there are always new bad actors. However, apparently there were not enough even to make any nominations. The Worst Director was won by William Shatner ("Star Trek V"), the Worst Screenplay was won by Eddie Murphy ("Harlem Nights"), and the Worst Original Song was won by Bruce Dickinson ("Bring Your Daughter to The Slaughter" from "Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child").

"I Know Who Killed Me" starts with Aubrey Fleming, a high school student (role by Lindsay Lohan), suddenly vanishing without a trace. A few weeks later, someone looking exactly the same (second role by Lindsay) is found. She claims to be Dakota Moss and to not know anything about Aubrey. The weird part is that Aubrey once wrote a short story for a homework assignment, introducing the character of Dakota Moss, and the real girl saying she is Dakota Moss behaves quite similarly to the fictional character with the same name. The movie includes several torture scenes. "I Know Who Killed Me" also won the Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Lindsay Lohan, tied for both roles), Worst Screen Couple (Lindsay Lohan and Lindsay Lohan, to quote the announcement, "as the yang to her yin"), Worst Rip-off, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay. "Herbie Fully Loaded" (2005) was a comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and a Volkswagen Beetle with its own will. In the comedy "Freaky Friday" (2003) Lindsay Lohan plays the daughter of Jamie Lee Curtis. One Friday they miraculously swap bodies. Lindsay also had a part in the 2013 comedy "InAPPropriate Comedy" about a tablet computer running all kinds of politically incorrect apps.
